Joe Calzaghe v Dean Francis Amateurs

Post by MightyWarrior »

Highlights of Joe in the ABA's, taking out Dean Francis with a perfect left hook - he could really punch in the early days, before the hands went, as they've got headgear on there.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDH4Y7hs ... re=related

And taking on another couple of future stars - Glen Catley

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5rw3MPC ... re=related

And Jason Matthews -

Joe showing early on how good that chin was, as these boys could all punch too.

A 'classic' Ken Dry stoppage, the Dave Parris of the domestic amateur game.

Thanks for putting those up as made for fantastic viewing. Easy to forget just how special he was in the ams - how he never made it to the olympics is criminal.
His dissection of Matthews there was a joy to watch in particular... loved his head movement while backed up against the ropes around the 40 second mark before going on the offensive.
In fact it's interesting to see how little the core of his style actually changed as his career progressed - a lot of the fundamentals were there, ranging from the slightly awkward, disorientating rhythm through to the hi-tempo workrate and blistering handspeed.

Great post :TU:

That youtube channel is well worth checking out as there's clips of Mayweather, Bruno, DeGale, Gavin, Khan v Kindelan rematch, Hearns etc etc!

Calzaghe won the ABA's at three different weight divisions - he was a superb amateur. His newest DVD has some more of his amateur fights on and they're great to watch. There's also an extra 'In the ring with Joe' where i presume they've fixed a camera onto Enzo's head or something as he does hook and jab pads cos you get the pov view an opponent would have. Anyone seen that??

Well, he wasn't going to win, was he?

Love the Harry Carpenter commentary, level headed, appreciative, informative, adding to the action rather than just talking over it.

Thanks for putting it up, Warrior

x2 brilliant, I have to say that amateur boxing was way more like pro boxing back then, amateur imo is poor, very poor since the mid 90's to late 90's.

Noticed just before the Francis fight the classic light heavyweight match up between my old mucca Paul Rogers against Kelly Oliver. Any chance of sticking this up on utube. Great fight.

Joseph Calzaghe looked good here. Shame his hands went, he was a spiteful puncher in the amateurs and early on in the pros.

It's a shame he never had the chance to go to the Olympics.

Youtube has his fight with Michael Smyth, the last British fighter to ever beat him, in 1990 in the Welsh ABA welterweight final.
I thought Calzaghe was robbed.

Yep that's exactly what I thought, his style looks just the same as it did..what 15 years later?
Talk about honing it to perfection..

Yeah I stumbled across this guy's videos just this week, never seen these before, and he's got loads of quality amateur stuff on there.
Was just watching a very young Diego Corrales, getting outpunched by a guy half his size, Augie Sanchez, who nearly hit the jackpot before an on the slide Naz woke up.

Go to www.youtube.com/nyamateurboxing

More US orientated but still loads of fighters in their early days, and some Olympic bouts as well.

www.youtube.com/dcamateurboxing is good too.

Yeah, Joe could really bang back in the day,. Three time ABA champ pure class

I think Francis beat my mate Derek McCann in the earlier rounds.

If he had been 20, do you think he could have survived until round 2?
