I don't know about you guys, but Roman Martinez didn't impress me too much against Nicky Cook. Cook was managing to outbox him until he suffered the knockout. Martinez appeared to be a little jaded just before he landed the big punch(and this was only in round 4).
Burns has the potential to take Martinez into deeper water. It looks an interesting little fight. Martinez is quicker, Burns lacks power but is pretty durable. I could see Martinez tiering in this one.
Interestingly this fight is on the same night as Abraham v Dirrell, Darchiniyan v Guerrero and Alexander v Urango. I'm hoping Primetime get this to us. This is what a PPV view card should always look like.

already had a thread about this fight. but still a interesting topic and match-up. martinez doesn't really posess any boxing skills to be honest. but he has the equaliser in the big punch. i see burns outboxing him on route to a decision. go on ricky!! if sky don't show this they should be lined up against the wall and shot. i dont want to watch this on some crappy peurto rican stream

Good luck to Ricky, it would be great if he could bring a belt back to Scotland. I slightly favour Burns on an even board but i Puerto Rico I dont see him getting it losing late or on points.
I think people are underestimating Martinez. He punches well in combinations and although I see Burns having his moments, the pressure, power and combination punching of Martinez will prove too much for Burns IMO. I see a late stoppage or wide decision win for Martinez but I'd love Burns to prove me wrong.

If he didn't possess any boxing skills, he'd have lost on his début. That's a very odd thing to say.
ok then he has average boxing skills
Again I'll disagree. If he had average boxing skills he'd not win a World title. Average implies he'd lose to half and win against half.
I think Martinez is better than our domestic fighters at the weight (Nicky Cook, Ricky Burns, Scott Lawton). If Martinez beats Burns will you admit that he is a good boxer? I'm not saying he's World class, but he's decent.

his boxing skills are pretty average for a world level boxer. im not implying that he would lose alot of fights. martinez is a good fighter with power and a good chin which make up for his pretty average boxing skills

Jeff Lacy didn't have average boxing skills. Your terminology is deeply flawed.

WHAT ABOUT THAT FELLA WHO KNOCKED OUT VIVAN HARRIS CARLOS MAUSSA I THINK.
Martinez has average boxing ability at the world class level, but he makes up for a lot of that with decent power, good combination punching, and a high work rate. He also has good stamina and finishes bouts strongly in the late rounds. This will make it very hard for Burns to win the title in Puerto Rico. It is unlikely that he will stop Martinez so he must box a perfect fight to earn a decision victory, which I do not think will happen.
My prediction is a wide decision for Martinez, not simply wide because he is in Puerto Rico, but because Burns won't be able to keep him off for twelve rounds and will eventually be overpowered. I expect Martinez to close the fight strong and bloody Burns up a little on route to winning at least eight rounds.
Martinez was supposed to fight Kevin Mitchell a few months ago (at least I believe he was) and I think Mitchell would have won that contest, but this bout will be all Martinez.

I'd love the type of average boxing skills than win you multiple amateur national titles in the US and get you to the third round of the olympics.
It is all relative. I think MrBoxing is trying to argue that Martinez and Lacy have average boxing skills at the world class level. Not in comparison to the average guy you find training at your local gym.
Boxing skills usually refer to the technical aspects of the sport, so power, speed, stamina etc, still play a role in how successful a fighter will be. That's what allows guys with "average" boxing skills to have success and win world titles.
Oh, i thought he was comparing Martinez and Lacy to my mate Colin down at Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch* ABC. Now Colin, he has average boxing skills.
Whilst I applaud the vast, untapped reserves of pedantry being displayed in this thread, I think Martinez will be just too strong & hit too hard for Burns. Although I read Martinez struggled against Feider Viloria in his last fight, so maybe Ricky can pull something out. Looking at Mr. Viloria's record, I'm pretty certain he's nothing to write home about, & if he can make the fight close after eight, maybe Burns can frustrate Roman for the full distance?
Will be tough to get the win in Puerto Rico, though. Good luck to him.
Martinez's boxing skills are underated.... are people basing this entirely on the brief showing we saw of him against the very decent Nicky Cook.
He's beat, and well beaten, some good names. It wasn't a massive upset at all what he did to Cook. Cook showed he can be vulnerable (cause Cook did hurt him) but Burns doesn't have the power to do that.
Burns didn't look great last time, and you have to make Martinez a clear favourite. Burns is tough and might last the distance, but ultimately I don't think he is strong enough to hold off Martinez.

Right - I thought Nicky looked really very good in that fight, but wasn't strong enough and got caught. I think he's miles better than Burns, although possibly not as durable.
Martinez spiteful stoppage in 8. Will be like Molitor -Michael Hunter, Canizales - Billy Hardy (2nd fight)....or even Luevano - Nicky cook.

i am basing his skills on alot of his fights. he was getting outboxed by cook until the ko. viloria gave him a very close fight before martinez ko'd him. also in a fight against jiminez he seemed to be an even fight until he pulled out the ko again in the 12th. I'm not saying he is a crap champion im just saying for a world champion his boxing skills are pretty limited. but he is tough and has power just like carl froch.
what good fighters has martinez beat?? im struggling to think of 1 apart from a pretty good nicky cook.

Francisco Lorenzo, who beat current IBF feather champ, Cristobal Cruz, before and after losing to Martinez.
