Cook vs Daws

Intriguing fight this.

Daws has some good fitness, and was really inspired the night he beat up Colin Lynes. He hasn't been really able to replicate this though. He looked quite vulnerable in the first Morrison fight, and Cook might have the power to exploit that body a bit.

This fight, in reality, has probably come a little too early in the Cook comeback - there is surely alot of ring rust on show. He has been vulnerable also, and it will be interesting to see if his stamina can hold. Daws isn't the biggest puncher.

I'm expecting a very entertaining fight, but I think Daws will have more confidence being a champion now and his freshness will prevail.

Also on the card it seems Tyan Booth is getting a surprise EU title fight against that pole Proska - cannot really see Booth doing much here.

Two-time British light-welterweight champion “Lightning” Lenny Daws hopes to cling on to the famous old belt against fiery Welsh puncher and former European lightweight champion Jason Cook at York Hall on February 12.

Daws, a big, strong, stay-strong exponent, won the British title in his last fight, also at York Hall, from the same fighter who had shocked him for the same title three long years ago: Barry "The Bizness" Morrison. Motherwell’s Morrison snatched a deserved split decision that night - and it led to a blip in the ex-champion’s previously unbeaten career. Londoner Lenny was then held to a draw by crafty Nigel Wright, a southpaw he had formerly licked, both as an amateur and pro, and endured spells of inactivity. It looked like burnout time for the grafting Morden veteran. His penchant for starting slowly, shipping a few punches, picking it up in the middle rounds and piling it on down the stretch pertains to a career-shortening one. He stopped the classy Colin Lynes in nine rounds that way. However, at 31 Daws proved as relentless as ever in the Morrison rematch, dropping the brave but exhausted Scot in the 10th round for the full count.
Cook is not quite so rejuvenated at almost 35. He won the European title with a stunning three-round knockout of Italy’s Sandro Casamonica in Italy way back in 2002 and built on that with a powerful run of displays that only weight problems brought to a regrettable end. Increasingly drained at lightweight, Cook was stopped in three shocking rounds at Hereford in November 2004 by feather-fisted Argentine, Aldo Rios, who was made to look like George Foreman. Frankly, the man from Maesteg looked finished but, after a few years out, Cook re-emerged in Prizefighter light-welterweight last year and did quite well to reach the semi-finals, where he lost to eventual winner, former WBA light-welterweight champion and fellow Welshman Gavin Rees, on a spirited three-round decision. Cook had snapped the unbeaten run of Londoner Michael Grant in his previous encounter (cuts).
In truth, it is hard to judge a man over the three-round distances offered by Prizefighter, and Cook was both cut and down against Rees, but he proved as exciting as ever, win and lose, and the last thing they lose is their punch. Cook could always whack. Moreover, he is fighting at the right weight now.
I think he will do well in the early rounds of this one, particularly as Daws is still only revving up then, as we know, but once Daws is fully into his stride, fully banging in the shots to head and body, there can only be one winner of a fun-filled contest.

I agree that this should be an entertaining dust up but I just cant see the older Welshman being able to live with Daws punch output, esp late on. looking forward to the fight, but as you say, there is only one winner..

Cook has showed there is still life left in him and still has the punch power, and for that reason has an outside chance, but discipline has let him down, and that's something Daws has never lacked.

If Jason can't hurt Daws, he's got big problems becuase I'd be very surpised if he can outbox him over the distance and I can see another Daws opponent sitting it out during the late rounds (or by stoppage) when it's dawned on him that Lenny can keep the pace up for the full 12 rounds.

Agree with that, Daws will be too fit for him. Cook may give him problems early but Daws superior fitness will be the defining factor imo

Solid undercard fight is Williams-Grant. A great chance for Grant to put the Prizefighter disappointment behind him, but in Williams he's got as tough and strong an opponent you could hope to meet (or not meet!). Over the ten rounds I think Williams will be too strong and hungry. It's a tough ask for Grant to box on the move for the entire 10 rounds.

I give Cook a good chance at the upset. I've seen Daws hurt before (Wright - first fight) and Cook is possibly the hardest puncher he's faced so far. Daws is a slow starter but picks up as fight goes on - Cook early might be worth a punt. I think you can get Cook by ko/tko/dq at really good odds :4-1 or 7-1(can't remember but can't check at work).

Also Daws is a big lightwelterweight and at thirty one doing weight can't be getting any easier. Another point is I always doubt a fighter who has talked of retirement(which Daws has done in the past) as theres an old saying along the lines of once you talk retirement you've one foot in the door. The logical result is Daws points/late stoppage but I just have a feeling Cook can land a corker. Its a lot closer than the odds suggest and I think I've just talked myself into having a go at Cook by ko/tko/dq!

edit: Whenever I think of Cook I'll forever get a video replay in my head of the monster left hook he landed in Italy to win the European title.

think cook has got a chance , if he gets them body shots off early i see him stopping daws early on around 5th , good fight for williams vs grant , think grant will be slippery but williams the stonger through out the fight to win on points , but michael will give it his all im sure
