I know you're not. :)feargalocuinneagain wrote:Paul McCloskey
Martin Rogan
Matthew Macklin
At the least to keep everybody happy Boxrec should have joint nationality (Irish/British) displayed.
I know this has been discussed before ( I'm not trying to be annoying).
McCloskey is from Northern Ireland, part of the United Kingdom, as is Rogan. So UK makes sense. Macklin was born in, and lives in, Birmingham, and also recently won the British middleweight title, so UK makes the most sense again.
That's my take.

For what reason? I can't see any logic to disagree, so I'd be interested to hear why.feargalocuinneagain wrote:I disagree, but you are entitled to your opinion
Re: Suggestions on BoxRec
I don't think it matters what they consider themselves. If I don't consider myself English it doesn't matter, I'm still English according to facts. The same goes for them. If they are Northern Irish, they are from the UK. I bet if we looked at their passports it would back me up.
Re: Suggestions on BoxRec
But they would have Northern Irish / British passports, no?feargalocuinneagain wrote:All three are entitled to irish passports. Any person in the North is entitled to an Irish passport and is thus entitled to Irish citizenship. When I was in college, any of the people from the North with a nationalist background nearly always had an Irish not a British passport. Those with a Unionist background had a British passport.Asterix wrote:I don't think it matters what they consider themselves. Macklin parent are from the Republic and thus he is entitled to an Irish passport. I would bet that all three have Irish passports (McCloskey and Rogie definitely, Macklin most likely).
Re: Suggestions on BoxRec
Interesting. It's a shame Irish & Northern Irish people are so fiercely nationalistic. I mean, it's good to be proud of your roots, but not to the point where you find it insulting to be called something else.feargalocuinneagain wrote:They would have Irish passports like myself and I'm from the Republic of Ireland/éire. Most of them would not have a british passport. This is my personal experience and I'm not saying that all nationalist people only have Irish passports. I remember asking a girl from the North once what passport she had and she nearly boxed me across the head for suggesting that she had a British passport
Re: Suggestions on BoxRec
If someone called me Irish I'd just say that I'm actually English, though if you trace my heritage on my Dad's side, they were Irish. I suppose the issue is compounded by British involvement in Irish issues, which doesn't happen the other way around, to my knowledge.feargalocuinneagain wrote: I suppose however if somebody called me British I admit that I would be insulted. Just as I'm insulted when people ask me the "english translation" of my name Feargal ó Cuinneagáin (mostly by irish people themselves). Don't get me wrong I have no problem with British people. I have gone to the UK on holiday and have a few english friends. I also don't particularly care whether Northern Ireland is part of the UK or Ireland.
But back to the original suggestion, does it matter to you if boxers you think are Irish are down as being from the UK when they are from Northern Ireland and have fought for a British title? That applies to Rogan and McCloskey, out of the three. Macklin is, I believe, British, as he was born here and resides here, though he has close Irish heritage.
Re: Suggestions on BoxRec
With footballers it's the country they play for that matters, not the team. If we take Macklin as an example, he could play for both England or Ireland, so I guess it's down to his choice. I suppose there is no right or wrong. :)feargalocuinneagain wrote:As a means to progressing their career I have no problem with Irish boxers from the North fighting for British titles. British titles have more value than Irish title due to the UK having a vastly greater population. I suppose it's like our international soccer players, all of them are playing for English/Scottish titles ( English leagues are far stonger than ours). If our soccer players all decided to stay at home it would retard their development. But you wouldn't consider Richard Dunne english because he plays for the Brummie side Aston Villa.
McCloskey has fought for Irish amateur titles and Macklin was Irish middleweight champion before he got the British title.
What probably matters most is what the fighters consider themselves their nationality to be? Not what fools like myself think!!!
I don't think that just because Macklin parents are Irish that he's irish. Frankie Galvin another Brummie also has irish parents but he feels himself more to be British and thus he is an english boxer and not an Irish boxer.
