IT'S ABOUT ALL THAT'S LEFT

Last night my grandkids were going to stay the night. While driving back and forth to work last week I saw that Circus Vargas had set up their big top in Balboa Park. It had been a while since I took the kids to the circus. My kids when they were little. My older grandkids later. Adam and Amanda had never been to the circus.

To me,a kid who has never been to the circus is like saying a kid never had ice cream and cake for his birthday. It took a little convincing on my part,but we all got loaded in the car and headed out to Balboa Park. By the way, it didn't take any convincing to get Maria to go. The first circuses we took our kids to were in Tijuana. There's a saying in Mexico:"Give them circuses and parades." I know way back then the circus in Mexico was very inexpensive. We always had a lot of fun.

Something about circus people. They seem very happy in their work. They're always enthusiastic and smiling. At Circus Vargas there's always participation with the kids in the audience. The skits the clowns have with the kids are hysterical.

As the acts unfolded ,I watched Maria and the kids. They were clapping and laughing ,eating popcorn,nachos,cotton candy,and hot dogs. It was the kids first time. They were excited.

Like I said,I'd been to the circus many times. My dad worked the Illinois State Fair selling donuts. That's the first time I met carny people. They're a tough breed. As much as the circus is fun,it has an eerie feeling about it. The freaks. The tent. The animals.It's a transient life sleeping in trailers. The acts are from all over the world. There are no roots. This is what I see it as, and it adds to the glamour. The mystique adds to the glamour.

But last night I got a creepy feeling. The prices for a ticket were very expensive. The audience was my kind of people:the barrio people. It must have put a crimp in their wallets to take the family out. Another thing. No animals. No animal acts. Since Adam and Amanda had never gone to the circus ,I didn't want to say I was disappointed that there were no animal acts.

I don't know how much life Circus Vargas has left. The original founder,Clifford Vargas ,died.The business mangers took it over until they retired. It must cost a lot of money to run a circus.

Imagine the day when there are no more circuses? When that happens,it will be back to Mexico. There's a saying in Mexico:"Give them circuses..."

was catching up on my reading on page 90 I remember Pappy Gault as somebodies trainer anybody know who Pappy gault trained

Hammer . . . I remember Pappy Gault as one of our better amateur coaches.
I believe he coached at least one of our Olympic teams.

Two different dudes, the black & white thing here, the Pappy that fought Keeny was white, the amateur coach was black.

Btw, I was at the Keeny/Pappy fight, didn't miss any of Keeny's fights other than the ones he had up North.

Which one got killed the fighter or the coach

Randy...Ever been to Lupe"s on Paramount and Beverly in Old Pico for burritos, burgers, etc etc.?
Took Connie and our daughter Linda today for some burritos.

Frank you know we never had taco shops like they have in California until about the last 15 years or so,we had a lot of mexican restaurants but no small taco stands but know that the mexican population has gone up tremendously we have them everywhere they beat taco bell by a mile

Thanks Frank . . . When I looked up the background of the fighter I saw his photo and realized that something was wrong. I knew Pappy Gault the coach was black. But the name is so unusual. Thanks for straightening things out.

Srry to hear that Frank I have 3 chihuahua and a min pin who if
you are not familiar with look like chihuahuas they all sleep in the bed with my wife and I,sometimes the howling and barking could drive you nuts,my condolences

I'm sorry about Max. I like dogs more than most people I know. When I was in Catholic school ,I asked the priest if dogs can go to heaven. The priest said "no." I said to myself to hell with the priest.

I'll tell you a little story. When my mother was around 70 years of age she went to work for the Catholic Community Services in San Diego. She worked under a priest named Father Kraft and a bishop. Well,being a man I always questioned the "celibacy" of these male church officials.My mother thought very highly of the priest she was working for. Then one day she comes home and told my father and I about how Father Kraft was roaming Balboa Park looking for young male runaways. (The Catholic Community Services are close to the park). She told us that the priest( this news did make the papers down here)was keeping a "safe house" with other priests to house these boys.Father Kraft had a boy named Pepe who was a runaway from Mexico City.The priest was so involved with this kid that this Pepe would dangle him on a string as he was having sex with other guys!Father Kraft was heart broken all the time.

In fact one priest was found with his throat slashed on a park bench. The priest told my mother that he was killed ,as he was looking for "chicken porn",in Balboa Park.

Disillusioned,my mother went to the bishop with her knowledge. The bishop told her to leave her job. You see,he was part one of the molesters also.

My father and I felt sorry for my mother. Maybe women really believe that that a man can abstain from sex. Maybe there are some who can.All I can say is that for the life of me is that somehow a man is going to "do it". Either with himself or someone else.

Like the saying"Boys will be boys." In my mother's case it was a man who took a sacred vow and then "did it"with a boy.
