Fijian Welterweight

Post by Brute »

Last night Sydney welterweight Dishod Mahmudov took his pro record to 3-0 (3KOs) by stopping Opeti Tagi (now 14-7 , 7KOs) in the first round at Epping, Vic.

What interested me was Tagi's record. All of his 14 wins have been in Fiji, all of his losses have been outside of Fiji including six KOs.

Like some beers, Opeti does not seem to travel well.

Wicked body shot, which Fijians can't handle, leveled him.
Apart from Zulfikar Ali, they're not much chop these days. They just don't have decent trainers.
Some show potential, but would need to move over here for a while to gain experience.

In mid to late 90's there was a handful based in NSW with Angelo Hyder & 3 in Qld, which were quite good. Didn't win many, but usually went the distance.
Isikeli Koroi, based in Brisbane, had some good battles http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_ ... &cat=boxer

Unable to box @ home nor travel overseas for 25 months (Feb 07 - Mar 09), while the government was knocking-up legislation & its Rules & Regs, didn't help matters

The fighters i've seen in Fiji and the fighters i've seen come here are pathetic at best, as said by Danny Green "some fighters don't need to be in the ring, but most do" and most Fijians take fights on short notice when they're under prepared and out of training and need the cash.

Limited ability, under prepared and out of shape makes for a poor showing. I wouldn't take anything out of that win if i was Mahmudov.

Bet my balls, when referee rocked into Tagi's dressing room to check hand wrapping, Tagi would've said; "You look after me"

Mate, all I reckon Mahmudov is looking to get out of is first 10 or so fights is a nice padded record...
