England 'fans' at Night of the Champions

Post by MacTavish »

Enjoyed the wembley show on saturday but must admit I did find it embarrasing and cringeworthy the behaviour of a sizeable minority of english fans basically singing English football songs and things like "You can sitick your f*king dragon up your a*se" and "Sheep Shaggers" at the welsh fans there for Clevely.

It was even more sad for the fact that most of the Welsh fans seemed to be children!

All lin all though a good night's boxing although all the fights were a bit one sided.

Yeah, I'm in no mood for dickhead football type fans at boxing events, too often it becomes threatening.

Happening more and more this type of thing the crossover from football 'fans' to boxing. The MEN arena events are ruined by it at the moment. Theres been a massive difference in the last 10 years in my opinion.
Why do we think it is? The small hall shows are a far better night out in my opinion.

I've found small hall shows are better for security (in general- there are exceptions.)

The security at (for example) Hughes V Pickering was very good- totally kept in control of things throughout the evening.

The best shows are those that don't serve alcahol.

I like a beer with my boxing, unfortunately there are those that like to blend several pints with marching powder.

My mrs used to always come along but after a fight one night she decided against it.

It was the muppets who came down to support Tony Dodson who started throwing chairs about and one they threw missed my friend's wife who was 6 months pregnant by about 3 inches - imagine if it hit her on the stomach?

so true. I put a thread up ages ago suggesting alcohol at boxing should be banned. i expected to have a lynchmob on me over it but quite a few people agreed

seeing as Clev was fighting on saturday it reminds me of a couple of his fans at York Hall for the McIntosh fight, who had clearly been into the nasal sports (wild-eyed, sweaty, gurning, chewing their own lips etc) the funniest result of this was that one not-very-well-built lad got his shirt off to show off his birdcage chest in a full-frontal 'most muscular' pose- the tw@ nearly ended up leaning too far over the balcony and doing a swandive into the cheap seats

Dont ban booze from boxing. Why should the minority spoil others fun. Get better security in place is the answer.

It's nothing new though is it, the English are fornicating animals at times, used to happen a lot in the 80's apparently. Get some proper security who aren't afraid of giving the wrong'uns a good fornicating kicking.

Genuine bother at boxing is few and far between. But when it does happen it is invariably because of booze and/or football-type fans. Proper boxing people don't cause bother because they don't need to. If you want to have a fight, go down the bloody gym - there's plenty of people there who'll accommodate you.

But, as Gomez points out, many of us like a beer and an alcohol ban would decimate attendances.

Better security is certainly needed. It's usually totally inadequate.

Or, as Nigel Benn said in confused disgust after trouble kicked off at his fight v that Paraguayan geezer (Gimenez?) - "If you want a fight, go down the boozer."

I agree, I can't be doing with these numpties. I can only really afford one fight in the next few months and it's a toss up between Murray and Haye. I'm gonna wait for Murray's fight to be announced because it'll be at a smaller venue and will just be better. All the Johnny-come-latelys will go to the Haye fight. Good luck to 'em.

The chants were out of order but I don't think it was a bad show in terms of fan behaviour. With the Walshes army of fans there I was expecting trouble but was pleasantly suprised. They were a whole lot worse at the 02!!!

Agreed - I found it more embarrasing than threatening. The fact that another set of people can't show thier flag and get a bit of an atmosphere going without being abused by the Inger-lund fans is ridiculous.

i dont have a problem with the football songs at boxing , i enjoy the atmosphere of a carl roch fight at nottingham arena , but it would be a different feel without the singing , and i think froch seems to enjoy it too .
but i do have a problem when people think booze and singing means they have to start trouble . i had a bit of trouble with some young mutley fans sat behind me at carl froch v andre dirrell, i might have made it a bit worse by the fact ive got maybe too big a pair of bollox at times , by confronting the whole lot of em on my own , but it was if all they were there to do was be idiots . i think they thought better of it though when the crowd realised it was 1 notts man against about 40 brummies , they must have sensed bad vibes because they shut up pretty quickly and headed off as soon as it finished , they were gone like a shot , but it was enough to ruin my enjoyment of the night , i can handle myself but i dont want to have to , when im watching boxing . i want the only fighting to be in the ring .

I've found it to be uncomfortably common.

Of 11 shows I've attended recently, there has been serious troublemaking/violence in the crowd near where I was sitting at 4 of them.

Three, as it happens, where Khan fights, but thats probably just co-incidence.

In all cases, it was just someone basically looking for a fight with random people out the crowd and generally being threatening and abusive.

Have you ever thought that YOU could be the problem?

Only joking mate. :box:

I've been to scores and scores of boxing bills and there hasn't been much bother. You're pretty much guaranteed some idiots kicking off at a Khan fight, mind.

Actually, I've been to two shows when riots stopped the whole bill (Rotherham and Darlington). Maybe I'm just so used to it I don't really notice it anymore. Tony Moran's fans tried to storm the ring when Hobson sparked him, I remember.

i was one of clevs welsh fans on sat night, intially i was sitting right by the cokney's who were chanting sheep shaggers and stuff. to be honest it was mostly a bit of harmless banter, i was with the misses and sang welsh songs in reply with no real trouble. we later moved over to be with the rest of the welsh boys and had a good laugh and was a brilliant atmosphere. worst i have ever seen was kahn v barrera where me and the misses was both genuinely shittin it. think that had a lot to do with liverpool v united the same day and the scousers winning 4-1. real boxing fans are usually harmless, pissed up football/arm chair boxing fans are the problem.

theres always a kind of moral argument isnt there.

for example im an not a fan of the mainstream crowd that get sucked in to watching the likes of Primo Fisting
i also dont like the Khan and Harrison crowds....they are bit sheep-like

for example......i was not happy with Khan v Prescott going off itv to sky ppv and i though the ones who went to watch the fight and paid to view on sky were TOTAL mugs who deserve everything they get !

and lets face it every Khan match since has been a joke !!!

i like Khan...but his fans are fools

and dont get me started on Primo Fisting's mob

Bang on - that's the party line and its true. If I had a pound for every time I've recited that sentence I'd have £78.

Bang on - taking booze away would mean I would be left going to the boxing on my own. It's hard enough to get casual fans to a fight in the first place and if there was no alcoholic beverages to placate them then there would be swaths of empty seats.

Bang on - Security at times can best be described as shambolic. The staff and the MEN especially are either inept or ill-equipped to deal with trouble of any sort. The are either unwilling or unable to get involved if anything kicks off. Contrast that to the way Jennings Security marshalled Hatton's recent show in Altrincham, the security guys were unobtrusive, cooperative and firm but friendly when it looked like someone was getting "too rowdy".

If you drunk you don't appreciate the action and you don't give you all for your fighter ( singing, chanting etc). For fvck sake you can get drunk after the fight! Security should be stepped up, anybody acting the fool should get the S**t kicked out of them.
Outside Limerick, having a drink doesnt equate to getting "hammered drunk".

I start to wonder!! :OhYes:

But seriously, I went to lots of live shows in the 90s- Benn, Naz, Ryan Rhodes headlining events at various sized venues for example. I don't remember there being any trouble (and this is maybe 15 shows in total) other than being pushed from behind once, and I turned round but the person had walked off- could have just been someone slipping, or an accident- no big deal.

However, recently, it's changed for some reason (at least, at the events I've been to.)

I've been to 11 professional shows sinse 2008 , and there have been four serious, notable incidents close to where I was. One was the incident at Bolton (Khan V Krisjnsen) where a man ended up in hospital (made the news) there was also a lone pillock at Khan V St Claire was was eventually thrown out after picking a fight (at something like the 5th attempt) with some Asians. There was also the incident at Khan V Kotelnik (mentioned before) and an indicent with police and very drunken fans after Haye V Maccarinelli.

But at other events too, there seems to have been a bit of "bad feeling" in the air.

Khan fights will always have problems imo. What was the crowd attendance the other night?
