Hi, Ice. A question outside of this post: who would you choose as the five best boxers and the five best punchers among U.S. amateur boxers of the 1980's (aside of Mark Breland)? P.S. I have the results of the 1975 and 1977 Ohio State Fair tournament.

Willie...I have those years plus many others (where did u get yours?)...I was in Columbus one year and I went to the library and microfilmed a whole bunch of results...not just the finals but the whole tournaments...Breland was probably the best boxer and the best puncher overall....Sweet Pea...Paul Gonzalez...Roy Jones and Kenny Gould were top boxers...McClellan was a strong puncher, Frankie Liles with the right hook...Ricky Womack and Tyson were big amateur hitters...Tyrell Biggs was maybe the best boxer among the big men...I'll have to think of some others...

Dave Villar's son Denzel Villar is 14 years old and the kid is a monster... If he trains right he's gonna be a problem

Hi, Ice. I requested microfilm of the Columbus, Ohio newspaper when I was searching for Clint Jackson's action in the 1975 and 1977 Ohio State Fair tournaments. Do you have results of the 1979 Ohio State Fair tournament? Sweet Pea is said to have won his division in that tournament. Do you have the dates and results of his bouts? Regards, and thanks, Willie

Re: 1987 Ohio State Fair and NATIONAL PAL results...
OHIO STATE FAIR Results:
...The Ohio Fair has drawn some of the biggest names in boxing to its tournament and, as a result, there have been some pretty interesting results that came from the thousands of matches held there through the years.
In 1973, for example, there was a 95 pound Junior Olympian (aged 12 years) in the tournament by the name of James Douglas (Or "Buster" as he is known to the world). Also in 1973 the 75 pound intermediate champion was none other than future (1984) Olympic Gold medalist Jerry Page of Columbus. Page defeated Daryl Churchill in the finals back in 1973 and then, eleven years later, went on to win his gold at 139 pounds in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympiad (along with Breland, Whitaker, Taylor and the others).
The 132 pound class in 1973 saw future world champions Hilmer Kenty and Aaron Pryor match up in the finals with Kenty taking a decision victory. One class up, at 139, Sugar Ray Leonard stopped Larry Morgan and the welterweight class saw Columbus' Ohio State Fair legend Milton "Pete" Seward score a finals night decision over future WBC Light heavy champ J.B. Williamson.
Note: rsc = referee stops contest. The amateur equivalent of a TKO.

Thanks, Ice. A question: what did you think of Jerry Page as an amateur. His strengths, weaknesses, etc.

Jerry won a LOADED 139 pound class (maybe the toughest of the 13 weights) at the 1984 Olympic Trials AND won one of the most exciting amateur fights I have EVER seen, that being the win over his opponent from Thailand at the 84' Olympics...threw a lot of punches, thats the main thing I remember about him...

Ice maybe you can help me?
i'm going down memory lane in regards to the Ohio State Fair--
I won the the 1985 open 112lb division and was hoping you had the results from that year and that tourney? There is not a day that goes by that i dont think about this great sport!
i enjoyed a 87-7 as an amateur and 7-0 as a pro before my knee blew out that ended my days in the ring-- My son 17 yrs old is just getting started in this sport and i wanted to share this with him-- hope you can help and old timer
Thanks
Sal

I fought in the 1985 tournament. I beat Terrell Scott of Memphis and believe I lost to the guy who beat Sal's brother Anthony in the next fight. His name was William Little. I was in the navy and fought Anthony in Little Creek Virginia.

...The Ohio Fair has drawn some of the biggest names in boxing to its tournament and, as a result, there have been some pretty interesting results that came from the thousands of matches held there through the years.

Re: 1987 Ohio State Fair and NATIONAL PAL results...
Hello,
I really appreciate this post and the research it took to bring it here. I have a favor to ask. I noticed you mentioned The unlucky Jerry Goff. I am from Detroit and I know Frank Tate and Thomas Tate and yeah the next year in 1983 when Goff fought Tyson, I was there. I fought that year and finished like 4th in my division. I lost to a guy whom was a lot older and had a ton more fights than me. No excuses, I was beaten and outclassed at the time. I am saying all of this to ask if you can send me or post the 1983 results? After Goff attempted to fight Tyson he left that night on a stretcher and in an ambulance. You rarely see such brutal knockouts in the amateurs. The MOST hilarious thing from that whole experience is the fact I met and trained with Tyson the day before the Goff fight because Tyson fought a guy named Copeland from my gym and in our pre-fight meetings the coaches hammered it down to Cope that if Tyson knocks you down to just stay down. I had NEVER heard such instructions from our team or coaches. Yes, Tyson did drop Copeland and yes, he did stay down with a chorus of "stay down" from us as teammates!! LOL
O.K. my apologies for typing such a long message but I have one last piece. So in preparation for my fight I go to the area assigned for us to workout and prepare for our fights. Whom do I run into, Mike Tyson. I am by myself and Mike asks, "You getting ready to fight?' I said yes, "I am fighting some guy from Hyatsville, MD." He says, "I am fighting some nigga from Detroit." To myself, I am saying, "I know good and damn well whom you're fighting (My gym mate and teammate Copeland!). I carefully don't let Mike know I am from Detroit or maybe he somehow knew and wanted to test my heart, IDK. He never asked me where I was from and we worked out for hours together, talking and chilling. Being kind of young I knew I needed to go back inside the three boxing ring coliseum so my father and my team don't think I had been kidnapped. No one knows I have been chilling with one of the most feared man in amateur boxing at this time. You have to remember there was no internet or social media and we all know about Tyson and what he was doing to folks. Mike and I find some seats near the top of the coliseum and we continue to talk and watch the boxing action. Eventually my father sees me and begins to approach us. Well Mike doesn't know this man approaching us is my father so he jumps up and basically is about to check my dad. I quickly let Mike know this is my father and I introduce the two and we all chill at the Ohio State Fair for a while.
