Jon gets WBF title shot.
At a press conference in Norwich today, it was announced that Jon will fight for the WBF lightweight title against an opponent to be named soon on April 9th at the Sports Village in Norwich.
Promoter Neil Featherby announced that two and a half year's after Jon beat Viktor Baranov in a WBF eliminator, he would now be going for the World title.
Jon as expected is over the moon at the prospect of 'making a dream come true'

I want to prove just how good I am, without a doubt I will win this fight, I will be training for this fight to perfection. When I made my comeback against Silence Saheed for two rounds I looked great, but then I had to use my brain and get the result. I didn't train properly as I was working full time, now thanks to the backing of Carl Moore I can train full time and you will see a completely different Jon Thaxton on the 9th
In December I went up against Carl Allen, an opponent who although classed as a journeyman is a dangerous one, but I knocked him out in 101 seconds, he was actually down for longer than the fight lasted. I've been in with the best, including Ricky Hatton and Eamonn Magee and now I've gone down a division, as I have said before, I will be too big and strong for anyone in the division.
The two years out of the ring have been good for me, yes I am older, but I am also wiser. When I got the news it was just a brilliant moment and I guarantee that on the night I will be giving it 100% and Norwich will have another World champion.
It is disappointing that I have not been elected to fight for the British title, and I thought after the Carl Allen fight I may have been nominated, but that's life. I just don't understand how someone like Dave Stewart merits a shot at the eliminators, all he has done is beaten Bobby Vanzie over four rounds. Once I win the title I will once again call out the likes of Graham Earl.'
Promoter Neil Featherby went on to say 'This could be the start of some fantastic night's of boxing here at the Sports Village and tickets for this one will go on sale next week. I am convinced this one will be a sell out, we have room for in the region of 2,000 spectators and it will be a great night for Norwich boxing, with Earl Ling also fighting for the British Masters cruiserweight title, Danny McIntosh making his pro debut and of course Danny Smith looking to continue his unbeaten start against Jason Collins.
Thaxton looks like the kid who has just been given the key to the sweet shop, the smile on his face gives you every indication of just how much this means to him. After in his words 'All the blood, sweat and tears of the past' this is Jon's opportunity to prove to everyone that he is a big player on the World stage again.

Lightweight devision is open at the moment, there are about 13/14 fighters in the devision who on their day could concievably beat the number 1 domestically in the devision.
I just would like to see them fight each other more often.
The Earl vs Bennett winner will obviously be fairly established as number 1 - given that Earl has beaten some of the top ten fighters, as has Bennett in getting this fight. Thats not to say though that any of the top 13/14 cannot beat the winner on a good day.
Its ver conjested and needs to be sorted.
As for Thaxton, he's in the mix providing he's 100% and can make the weight okay. I'm sure he'll admit that he hasn't had the greatest of tests since his return and while the reports have looked good, I haven't seen him since his return to pass a judgment.
