Eddie Machen's Strength and Weakness

Post by kovit »

I would please like to know what was strength and weakness of former heavyweight contender Eddie Machen that help him won and lost the fight?

I have not seen that much of Machen so I can't really comment that much. But I understand that he had good Boxing skills but was not a big puncher at World level.

I am of the understanding that he received a lot of negative press for 'running scared' against Sonny Liston.

Hopefully others here will know more.

Machen was a very slippery defensive HW who packed decent but not great power. He had very fast hands and was a great combination puncher. His weaknesses were his tendency to sometimes ´sleepwalk´ through fights. His chin was pretty good but not KO-proof. His fight with Liston was a good effort-he didnt run scared but fought the only fight Liston allowed him to, which was to fight Liston at ring center and occasionaly go in for flurries, as Listons jab and power kept at bay from long range fighting.

I see him as a better, harder-hitting version of Chris Byrd . . .

Machen was fast with good defense, counterpunching and all-around ring savvy. He was also tough, durable, and had good survival skills.
On the downside, he was small for a heavyweight with a short reach, and he wasn't a particularly powerful puncher.

Machen was a very good fighter but he was mentally unstable I believe he had a couple of episodes during his career where he suffered mental breakdowns .
I met an ex boxer who was a stablemate of Machen and he said Machen had a very erratic personality. That may have stopped him from getting all the way In spite of his obvious great skills
