Bellew vs Atoli Moore vacant Commonwealth
Re: Bellew vs Atoli Moore vacant Commonwealth
That bloody commonwealth belt again!!!!
Re: Bellew vs Atoli Moore vacant Commonwealth
his record is probably better and bigger than that. Remember the lad from Ghana that Lee McAllister fought recently - Boxrec had him listed as only having five fights but his real record was 20+ fights.

To be fair to Tony the list of fighters offered the opportunity is extensive.
It's not his fault if they don't want a piece of him.

We’ve received call from Dean Powell this morning. Moore’s official record is 10-0 (6) and he is Ghana’s current light-heavyweight champion. Please find a link to the updated article above.
As excellent as Boxrec is, verifying the records of African boxers isn’t easy and it did seem unrealistic that the Commonwealth commission would allow a fighter with only 4 fights to contest its title.
Naturally, the ideal scenario would have been for Bellew to meet Ovill McKenzie but McKenzie’s team are taking him down another route.

A 5'6 Light Heavyweight - has to be an error or else he is one built up fella. One thing about the Ghanains is they are usually durable and can go the 12 rounds. Would have like to see Bellew - McKenzie but this is a good chance for Tony to get his hands on a belt.

Any chance of a paid job in Ghana to keep track of boxers records?

Ah yes, that fabled 'Ghanaian television league' that nobody really has actual proof it exists. I reckon all the UK promoters must have got together one day and agreed to make up this 'league' to explain why fighters with less than a handful of fights get title shots.Deno1986 wrote:his record is probably better and bigger than that. It's doubt it will be a fight Tony wil learn anything from, it's just an opportunity to pick up a meaningless title.

Look forward to seeing Tony's interview.
I don't think McKenzie would fancy the job Deno.

Another boring example of a Warren fighter giving up the commonwealth belt for another Warren fighter to take it with ease
see francis vacating for cleverly to take it, mitchell vacting for burns and now cleverley for bellew, the commonwealth title is officially the new WBU and no longer has any worth due to these kinds of shennanigans

Re: Bellew vs Atoli Moore vacant Commonwealth
Sh1t fight for Bellew, but it aint his fault, he would fight anyone but no one wants to fight him. Frank needs to dig deep into his pockets for future fights.
Re: Bellew vs Atoli Moore vacant Commonwealth
Unfortunately it's pretty much worse than the WBU, at least then the challengers could come from anywhere and occasionally there would be a decent one people had heard of. I'm getting bored watching these unknown Africans coming over waiting for the next Munyai or Asiku. More often than not they are dreadful. They served a purpose in getting some more KOs on Cleverleys record and he seems to be carrying it on but surely guys we know for sure can take a punch are the sort that Bellew should be fighting?The_Don1 wrote:Another boring example of a Warren fighter giving up the commonwealth belt for another Warren fighter to take it with ease

I appreciate that non of this is up to Bellew but it doesn't help us as fans

Menaingless title? Its one of the most prestigeous title belts in world boxing! It historically has more prestige than any of the world title belts such as the IBF, WBO and WBC - it is the oldest regional boxing belt out there and has been fought and won by some of the best fighters this sport has ever had. In Australia and Canada especially - a commonwealth (or British Empire as it was known then) title was just a notch down from a undisputed world title not that long ago.ArtOfWar wrote:It's doubt it will be a fight Tony wil learn anything from, it's just an opportunity to pick up a meaningless title.
The title is not meaniningless - the fights being made on behalf of the title are meaningless - thats different - I blame the BBB of C for not sanctioning more Commonwealth title fights in Australia and Canada and not promoting more fighters from the Commonwealth as mandatory contenders. Thats always been a problem though - Henry Cooper was able to blatantly duck George Chuvalo for over 10 years when he was Commonwealth champion - One of George Chuvalo's biggest boxing regrets? Not being Commonwealth heavyweight champion.
Fwank is to blame for a lot of it - I still remember Mo Hussein vs Bright Spider and the 40 seconds it lasted for the Commonwelath lightweight title over 20 years ago and it hasn't really got any better - Its either that kind of match up or all Brtish affairs which just defeats the purpose of the title - the thing to do, and that is if you care about one of the more historically important parts of boxing history - Is to make the Commonwealth title once more exclusive to all of the Commonwealth - even if it means a five year freeze on British fighters fighting for the Commonwealth title. For too long - it has been used as a de facto British belt and it's wrong.

All correct Ben, but then how can we tell that this 10-0 (6) isn't valid and verified also?
If the commonwealth commission have a verified fight record for this guy, then sure its not that had for the edititors and the contacts at boxrec to get that.
What I am trying to say is surely it is as easy to BS a record for a positive (not suggesting the Dean or anyone at FW is purposely doing this) as it is a negative. Remember the Southampton player claiming to be George Weah's cousin!
Re: Bellew vs Atoli Moore vacant Commonwealth
At the end of the day it's the fighters who make the titles. The history of the belt means nothing in today's context. It's a belt that only certain fighters can fight for and I don't see it as a prestigeous belt at all. I don't really rate any titles that highly to be honest, but the commonwealth belt isn't on my radar at all. Boxing has been so badly diluted that it just makes it hard to give credence to any title.Carlos-Wigan wrote:Menaingless title? Its one of the most prestigeous title belts in world boxing! I'd much rather see Bellew take on a rugged/experienced opponant who will give him something to think about for no title.
Re: Bellew vs Atoli Moore vacant Commonwealth
Soft fight for Bellew, but it will get him a title and be a stepping stone for bigger fights.
Bet MH's fighters wished they got such opportunities and I bet this will be televised too!

All I can say is that you don't read, care or know anything about boxing history. To say the titles worth and prestige is in the hands of Mr Fwank Warren and the likes of is also ridiculous along with the comment insinuating that the Commonwealth title is on par with some inter-continental bauble - get rid of those titles and I won't care personally.ArtOfWar wrote: At the end of the day it's the fighters who make the titles. As for the comment 'its a belt only certain fighters fight for' Well, isn't that most regional title belts including the British and the European?
I agree that the fighters make the titles and the likes of Lionel Rose, Freddie Mills, John Conteh, Vic Toweel, Tony Mundine, Larry Gains, Hector Thompson, Clyde Gray etc etc means that the Commonwealth title is one of the few titles in boxing with real historical gravitas - ignore it if you want but to ignore is to realise why we are in this situation today with crappy baubles and a dozen 'world' title belts - nobody gives a monkey's - shame!
Re: Bellew vs Atoli Moore vacant Commonwealth
But currently the commonwealth title is being abused. People fighting unknown africans with unknown records before giving it over to the next guy to do the same. Aussie's, Canadians etc just don't fight for the belt anymore. If this guy turns out to be as good as some of the rubbish Cleverly beat for the belt then i'm not sure how it can be built up as some sort of great achievement?
Re: Bellew vs Atoli Moore vacant Commonwealth
Actually, I agree with both sides of this, partly. I admire Carlos for vehemently sticking up for the HISTORY of the titles. The thing is, it's because I love that aspect of it that I agree with the view that today the titles have been devalued so much.
The only titles I have much regard for these days are the British and Area ones.

Exactly - but I don't think it is because Australians or the Canadians care about the title because the title is such an important part of their boxing history - It is because the Commonwealth council is too much of a weak ass governing body as to strip or refuse poor matches on behalf of the title.Lenny wrote:But currently the commonwealth title is being abused. I love 'google' news and you can read boxing articles (for free) in the Aussie and Canadian newspapers from the 1960s-80s and you can see how important the Commonwealth title belt is and the fighters who wanted to fight for the title - some of the biggest names in boxing. I agree the title has been devalued by the terrible matches but that can remedied pretty quickly I think.
I don't mind Tony Bellew fighting for the title, but why not fight Tim Bell - undefeated Australian light heavyweight champion? Something like 18-5-2 and never been knocked out - the purses in Australia aren't that brilliant - I bet if Fwank offered him a half decent purse he would come out to Liverpool.

ouch, if Bell is the usual prototypical come-forward 'ard-as-nails Aussie, that fight would be pretty brutal.
