Preparing for a shot makes a huge difference. It's being caught when you don't suspect it that changes things. In a fight it's the shot you don't see (or are not prepared for) that unravels a fighter. (Although I'm not quite sure there is anything you can do to prepare for a dead on target liver shot, other than to block it or leave town before it arrives).
