CURTIS COKES on ALI's Fouling

Post by granberry »

from:

The Complete Book of Boxing
by Curtis Cokes with Hugh Kayser
1980, ETC Publications, Palm Springs, Calif.

On page 88 Cokes writes of Ali:

"Many fighters and most spectators fail to realize what he is doing. When in a clinch Ali leans on his opponent, grabbing him behind the neck with his left hand and forcing his head downward. After a few rounds of this, the opponent becomes weary and cannot continue to fight effectively. He also leans on his opponent and wears him out by placing his right glove on his adversary's shoulder as he continues to pull the neck down with his left glove."

Referees would put a stop to it. As that job falls under their set of responsibilities. Some of the famous words spoken on this subject was, "Break!" And "Cut it out Ali". Very similar to how they would look at Mr Dempsey and point to the neutral corner and/or say to Jack, Back to the corner Jack!

A bit like Marciano elbowing, low-blowing, headbutting, hitting after the bell and forearm smashing.

Lets face it leaning on an opponent is hardly unique to Ali

Clueless buz posts raw falsehoods in his attempt to paint his hero in a better light.

Referees DID NOT put a stop to it.

Ali spent entire fights doing this crap.
The referees let him run wild.

But when poor Ali fought Jimmy Young, he fought an opponent who was totally prepared to negate each and every one of Ali's non boxing fouls.

Now clueless buz will tell us WHAT YOUNG DID to stop Ali from using this particular non boxing foul.

It's right there on the film of the fight.

Use your knowledge of boxing (LOL) and your eyesight and tell us all what Young did to keep Ali from fouling him in this way.

Go to it, buz.

granberry, One must protect themselves at all times.

I see that one of the things Jimmy did was stick his head out of the ring time and time again in order to avoid being hit with legal punches.

Probably why he didn't win the fight. Imagine, if he simply would have cut that nonsense he would have been champion.

granberry, You are a "no nonsense" sort of fellow. So you can appreciate that Young was just being a bit outlandish with that nonsensical "head out of the ringl" behavior. And it cost him dearly didnt' it? I'll answer the question for you. Yes it did. It probably cost him the fight and the championship. Something both you and I would have been just fine with.

Remember that I like Jimmy Young a lot. Can you imagine if Ali would have had Jimmy's typical sense of discipline? He would have been even greater than he was. It is amazing to me that such a disciplined fighter as Young could have been so foolish as to become undisciplined on the night when it meant the most. I suppose you could call it inconsistent. But I think it was just an anomaly. Your right that Jimmy had what it took to beat Ali that night, if only he would have behaved like a fully disciplined fighter, which he typically was. But sadly for Jimmy, not on that particular night.

Buz cannot tell us what Jimmy Young did when Ali tried this particular foul that stopped Ali from successfully using it

because buz is clueless on the subject of boxing.

That is no surprise.

The quote is from welterweight champion Curtis Cokes.

Learn how to read.

Are you saying that Curtis Cokes "hated" Ali?

With his knowledge of boxing, Curtis Cokes described what Ali did.

If you don't like that, complain to Curtis Cokes.

I'm just wondering how Curtis Cokes thinks that people fail to realise what Ali was doing. :??

Ali is possible the most photographed & filmed boxer in history, so it would have been plain to see what he was doing in some of his fights.

Did Curtis Cokes have any comments on Jimmy Young poking his head out of the ropes at least six times during the Ali fight?

It's impossible to tell from that quote if Cokes is criticising or praising Ali.

granberry, I can tell you exactly what Jimmy did to be so effective against Ali. If for no other reason other than the fact that you have mentioned it many times here on the forum. So I chose to mention an item you have never addressed. Why go over what we both know? So the newer and more fascinating topic is:

What the heck was Jimmy thinking with that "head out the ring" nonsense?

Something you and I, for all of our friendly conversations, have never discussed.

Hey, BO

Clueless buz can't answer the simple question of what Jimmy Young did to stop Ali in his tracks from this foul.

Clueless buz offers his juvenile trying to change the subject.

Why don't you tell us what Jimmy Young to stop Ali from using his favorite non boxing foul?

It's perfectly clear on the film of the fight where Jimmy Young gave a 15 round class on how to make an ass of Ali.

All the collins clones posting together are not competent enough to answer the simple question of what Jimmy Young did to stop Ali from using this foul.
