Re: Have you ever bumped into a boxer randomly?
Not really randomly but at the Witter v Bradley fight in Nottingham in 2008 me and a mate had a long chat with Johnny Nelson who was meandering around by the ring. He was such a nice bloke and when I went over to chat he said he was pleased somebody still recognised him! Was a really interesting chat actually. He said he reckoned at his best he would have knocked David Haye out after boring him for 10 rounds and said that he never really rated Maccarinelli. Was actually shocked by how nice he was.

Re: Have you ever bumped into a boxer randomly?
Going on holiday to Menorca in 1998 I spotted Gary Jacobs on the plane. Turns out he and his family were staying in the next villa to us in a holiday complex, a really nice guy.
That was a couple of years before I got involved in boxing (I'm now an MC) and I see him loads now around the shows.
Early 2006, when Scott Harrison's title defense against Gairy St Clair was looking in doubt and the Scottish press were following his every move, he disappeared off the radar. I went out for dinner one Saturday night with the family to a little restaurant on Loch Lomond. Walking outside on my own for a fag, I bumped into a guy on his own. I nodded at him and he said "do I know you?" It was Scott Harrison. I said that we had never been introduced but that I was a boxing MC.
He said that was where he knew me from and we talked for over half an hour, so long in fact that my son came out looking for me! He came across as a top bloke, I think he was happy just to speak to someone that didn't want a story, an autograph or to judge him.
I knew that the press were hunting for him and never told anyone in the boxing world that I had seen him that night for months afterwards.

Bumped into Kevin Leushing on Carnaby Street once, would've been shortly after he packed up.
He was happy to have a chat and i think he was pleasantly suprised that i knew who he was.
I often bump into Pat Mullings as he lives local to me and i've known him for donkeys.
Not so random, as it was the day before the first Lewis v Holyfield fight, but bumped into Glenn McCrory in a bar in New York.
Again he was happy to chat and sign stuff.

Bumped into David Haye in Grosvenor Sqaure about 2 years ago. Chatted for about 15 mins. Top man Haye, no side to him at all.
Re: Have you ever bumped into a boxer randomly?
I've seen Shea Neary a few times at Eveerton games, but never talked to him.
My best mate went to school with John Conteh's sister, so I've seen him a few times.
The most random/weird was in the early 90's. I was at a nightclub, near Chorley, with my girlfriend, when Alan Minter approached us, and asked if he might "pretend to be with us for a few minutes". Seemed like a couple of lads were wanting to cause trouble/make a name for themselves, and he thought that they'd lose interest if he wasn't on his own. We chatted for a while, until the lads wandered off. Semed like a nice bloke.

Beat this one I got off the metro at the Gmex in manchester as I was walking past the midland hotel Joe Calzaghi walked out so I offered to shake his hand . He was then followed a few minutes later by who else " Mike Tyson " . It was in the build up to the Tyson vs Francis fight . Me and my mate managed to get high five off Tyson who was swiftly zoomed off in a waiting car with all kinds of Paparazi in chase after him .

I remember sitting in a car with mates, outside the Midland Hotel in the preceeding days to the Tyson -v- Francis fight.
I never got to speak to him, but I saw him come out of the hotel & get ushered into a limousine.

Re: Have you ever bumped into a boxer randomly?
My brother met David Haye on a train to Sheffield a few years ago now (on their way to the Thompson-Rothmann classic). Typically, the train was absolutely jam-packed and Haye and Adam Booth were unable to find a seat, so they sat on the edge of my brother's seat, chatting boxing for the entire journey.
I once walked past Joe Awome and Dave Proud in the City (who, I can hear you asking?). Proud was in a suit and really looked the part, but his face told a very different story. The contrast was quite shocking, in fact. Awome won the Commonealth Games heavyweight gold medal in 1978 and had all the 'moves' but lacked a chin. He died of a brain tumour, still a relatively young man.

Re: Have you ever bumped into a boxer randomly?
Just recently, I left my firm's office in bournemouth and jogged to my car and as soon as I looked up I saw Steve Bendall coming towards me on the pavement. Quick as a flash I instinctively called out at him: 'Stevie Bendall - quality fighter' and promptly reached out and shook his hand as I jogged past him.
The look on his face was class as if to say 'WTF'?

Re: Have you ever bumped into a boxer randomly?
I think I've just achieved the most random meeting ever...........last night, well just before 2 a.m. this morning, to be precise, Mike Tyson walked into the Asda store in St Helens , where I work, and purchased half a dozen dvd's, including one about himself
He was accompanied by his wife and a driver/minder. Apparently he'd been at the DW Stadium in Wigan, but was staying at a hotel in St Helens.
