The Complete Book of Boxing
by Curtis Cokes with Hugh Kayser
1980, ETC Publications, Palm Springs, Calif.
On page 45 Cokes writes:
"During the recent series of the United States Championship Boxing Matches on ABC, several of the ring announcers described looping right hand blows as right hooks. There are no such punches as right hooks for the right-handed fighter and those who really know boxing understand that those alleged right hooks are round house rights or sweeping right hands that usually leave the aggressor wide open and vulnerable to counter punches."

Re: A former champ discusses boxing
IN his book "Boxing" Edwin L. Haislet has diagrams and
descriptions of Orthodox fighters using the right hook
to the body, and to the head.
This is a decent instructional published in 1940.
I have also come across other fighters refering to such
a blow as a 'right hook'. I have also heard the jab called
a 'straight left', does it matter what a technique or blow
is called once it has hit you ?

Those people don't know what a hook is.
Curtis Cokes does.
Sites like this are for those type of people.
In fact those type of people work actively on sites like this to trash and drive away anything that actually has to do with boxing.
Look at buz and collins hard at work today trashing the Curtis Cokes quotes threads.
As Cokes explains, a looping punch is just a less than competent "punch" thrown by a poorly schooled "fighter."
It is not a hook.
What does a jab, which is a straight punch have to do with this discussion?

Thankfully, granberry only "trains" fighters in his mind.
Re: A former champ discusses boxing
collins is desperate to trash any thread that actually discusses the techniques of boxing.
Seeing the quotes from former welterweight champion Curtis Cokes has driven collins wild.
collins CANNOT ALLOW any discussion of actual boxing techniques on boxrec.
