Lee Beard & Joan Guzman

Post by whiskey »

A friend trained there today with them and said what a cracking guy Guzman is and that he is unbelievably talented.

Training in Manchester at the moment and hopefully get a story over the weekend up.

Yeah I saw him train in Gleason's last summer, he's incredibly talented but I don't think he has the drive some fighters have. He could rule the lightweight decision but look at how he has only had 3 fights since the end of 2006.

He has a tremendous amount of natural ability and is a great fighter but he has issues and I don't know what they are but they definately affect him. Have a tape of the Funeka fight and he lost by miles, he started great won the first two rounds and then barely competed in any round, he got badly hurt in the 8th or 9th and looked stoppable for the first time, that I can remember.

If Beard can sort him out he can still take the division apart but not sure once it gets tough he really wants a row.

BTW Funeka is a good fighter, he impressed me a lot although after two rounds he was allowed to do pretty much as he wished so I suppose I may be over-rating him.

Getting some great opportunities for someone quite new to the scene.

Whats his relationship with Floyd Snr now?

Don't think they like each other ! Floyd blamed Beard for what went wrong in Ricky's training camp

Mayweather Snr is quick to claim the plaudits when things go well, but even quicker to delegate responsibility when it goes wrong.

Am I right in think that Guzman is in Manchester? Blow me, Beard has built a good reputation! Joan wouldn't come over here for an easy pay day against Arthur but jets across the Atlantic to train with an unproven trainer??

Am I missing something? I guess the Guzman link was through Floyd Sr as he had Joan for one fight didn't he? I assume Joy and Lee are on speaking terms?

didnt Joan Guzman hold auditions or something silly like that and he liked the look of Beard?

Thats what I am trying to work out. I thought Guzman was working under Floyd Snr for a few fights - I am wondering if he attributed most of his success to Beard and not Floyd - thats why he is with him.

Tim Coleman has really being speaking high of Beard in a few American gyms.

Looks to be paying dividend.

I am just happy to see such high quality fighters in this city - it can only be a good thing!!

To be fair, Lee also didn't help himself voicing his concerns about Floyd Snr outside of the camp before the fight.

he did have visa problems, he was meant to come over 2 weeks ago but got refused at the airport, and had to wait for 2 weeks for the embassy to sort it out.

Let's be honest here - It's a very good job for Alex Arthur he did have a visa problem.

He would have been utterly dominated and wouldn't have picked up the vacant title.
