The 27-year-old boxer could have been sentenced to up to three months in prison which would have jeopardized his scheduled June 11 showdown with Arturo Gatti.
The charge stemmed from a bar altercation that left a bouncer injured. William Morris, who works at The Radio Tavern in Grand Rapids, told police he was knocked onto the floor of the bar in December 2003 when a man who was not Mayweather broke a bottle over his head.
While Morris was down, Mayweather kicked him, Morris said.
Morris sued Mayweather in Kent County Circuit Court. The lawsuit recently was settled out of court.
Mayweather stood silently for much of his sentencing hearing. He was labelled "crass, inhuman and uncaring" by the judge for kicking someone who had been beaten to the ground.
"Ninety days would ruin your career and I don't want to ruin your career," the judge finally told him.
Instead, Judge Christensen ordered the boxer to pay $935 in fines and costs and perform 80 hours of community service.
Mayweather, who missed several scheduled court appearances and was late on Wednesday, apologized to the judge for his tardiness and absences.
