Agreed.

But if the ***** in London don't want it, please feel free to bring more events up North, especially to Liverpool or Manchester.

I hear that - but I would have loved to have gone to the fight in that venue because I am one of a generation that missed out on going to fights back when they did have the licence - they allow 1,000's of screaming girls attend JLS concerts and flood out onto the street after that but we are obviously "scum" - where are the elected representatives to stick up for us?

I agree with DG.

To be honest, Boxing promoters only have themselves to blame for failing to control the trouble makers that go to boxing.

99% of boxing fans are good people, it's the idiot 1% at events that spoil it for everyone else.

It's the small, but very vocal and frankly dangerous element I'd be worried about if I was local to a venue.

Put directly- Even as a fan of the sport, I stay away from a certain venue now.

I must have seen about 60-70 bills at the Albert Hall and I never remember any trouble outside the venue. Indeed the set-up of the Albert Hall, with no pubs nearby, and people drifting in during the undercard rather than getting there for a set start time means there was less likely to be trouble outside than many of the concerts they have there.

The Albert Hall is the real home of British boxing and it should return there. It staged boxing 15 years before the York Hall was even built. Boxing was at the Albert Hall 34 years before the Proms were there. Jimmy Wilde, Ted 'Kid" Lewis, Calzaghe, Lennox, Hatton, Buchanan, Benn, Hamed, Berg all boxed there, plus just about anyone else you can think of.

I did a piece on my blog about it last month. http://timesonline.typepad.com/boxing/2 ... -hall.html

This should be just a technicality rather than a "win for the residents" as all the judge said was that the consultation had not been thorough enough.

Well they better be careful when The Specials play there next month and 5,000 skinheads turn up. Or Noel Gallagher. Or the Arctic Monkeys. Did the local residents object when the Mobo awards were there?

Seeing as there is no proof of supposed "serious incidents" surrounding boxing.

The Albert Hall is a commercial venue that should be able to rent to whom it decides. Boxing has a near 100-year history at the venue. Are the local residents claiming they didn't know the Albert Hall was there when they moved in?

well its kinda their own fault that they dont have the licence because wasnt it an oversight on their behalf in the first place that left excluding boxing and wrestling.

Like I said, I would love ot watch a fight at that venue.

I would imagine the whole Police Force were out that night.

Its the rivalry that micks off that might concern the resoidents, people who follow bands etc all like the same thing.

Plus people who like bixing like to watch people hit eachother. Might have somethng to do with it. Most of the old WHO lot are doctor and lawyers...and a few vets now.

I've seen direct eveidence of drunken violence at more than one event.

Why being naive about this? This is a VERY bad element that attend boxing shows. You wouldn't get these at Hannah Montana, WWE or Rigoletto.

The residents have won the court case. I am sure if they had their way the music would go too but the licence for that is longstanding and extant. The sport's licence was not renewed by the council and expired some time ago. The council recently reapplied for the licence, the residents objected, the high court sided with the residents. End of.
thats not my understanding.

The boxing licence goes back just as long as the music but when official licencing came in the Albert Hall had to go through the formality of reapplying but the inadvertantly left boxing and wrestling off the list - it therefore lapsed and they have struggled to get it back because obviously the residents dont want an increase in use as its hassle for them.

Also, the level of drunkeness associated with boxing fans is much worse than virtually all other live events.

You may well be right but it does not change the fact the residents have won. If I was a resident there, I would be singing from the same song sheet as them.
well from what Ron is saying it seems they havent won - just that the RAH were a bit sneaky about trying to squeeze this one in and that they have to start the whole consulation programme over again

As far as I'm aware, the High Court did not rule that the residents were right, just that the consultation was inadequate because it relied on an out of date computer database and the council did not write to enough residents.
What would now happen is that the council must reopen consultation before the change to the licence is approved.
I covered quite a few licensing committees in my days in local papers. And I would assume that a new application is now put in to the local council, who would be unlikely to deny it unless they had proof of serious, regular disturbances surrounding boxing outside the Albert Hall. If the council (who have already approved it once) refused it, the Hall could appeal and the council would be liable for costs if it was decided they turned it down for no good reason. Not liking the type of people that attend boxing is not a good reason.
The only worry would really be if the Hall declined to bother to put the application in again, or if the council caved in to a few locals, although you would imagine that the demands of the Hall would take preference over a few residents.

Its not, mate.Oasis concerts make even Hatton fights look calm,The Arctic Monkeys (soon to play RAH) attract a "hooligan" element too.Drugs are more widespread at music events as well.Get the crime figures for Glastonbury, theres assaults, drugs, theft and usually even a murder! There not all peace loving hippies.

The last show was Barrera v Lloyd and Danny Williams v Julius Francis.

Considering the same council has given boxing licences to the Savoy and Grosvenor House, as well as countless other hotels in swanky areas of central London, I can't see what possible reasons it could have to deny an application from the Albert Hall.
