Hey lads
I was curious to know what happened to Jones after he retired
due to his eye injury.
I know he was some what portly and got criticised for this, but
he had a decent back ground and was not the worse contender
in history.
I hope he is well.
Though I have only ever seen his loss to Holmes, I would like to
see more of him in action.
Thanks guys.

Well, he has certainly kept his nose clean - a class act.Robinson wrote:Hey lads

Re: Leroy Jones
I remember when Leroy Jones spoke on TV just after his loss to Larry Holmes
and said that Holmes thumbed him over and over.
And then Holmes won his very next bout, against Scott Ledoux, with the winning "blow" being a thumb to the eye.
And the very same winning "blow" in a later fight against Scott Frank.
But Fritizie Zivic is routinely called a "dirty" fighter.

Re: Leroy Jones
Jones was/is routinely described as a chubby but skilled, quick-handed fighter in the vein of Tubbs/Mathis.
But when I see him vs Holmes his speed to me is very underwhelming; not nearly as fast as Tubbs or Mathis. Holmes actually possessed the very real handspeed advantage in the fight. One of Larry's best performances IMO he really kicked Leroy's ass.

Yeah, so you say.
You also gave us some great comments about that "Tommy Ryan" bout you thought you saw last week.
Pure comedic gold, mate.

What were your impressions of Jones as a fighter.
I recall you saying he was a fat something, though
that was a long time ago.
Besides his eye being damaged by the evil Holmes,
who was nothing more than a stooge for Ali and
King, what were your impressions of his opponent
here... who seemed to have a decent run as an
amateur and pro leading up to his fight with Holmes.
Thanks again

Re: Leroy Jones
Yep, in my old amateur days we used to drill double jab right thumb, over and over and over again. Needles to say my thumb is no longer opposable!granberry wrote:He also THUMBED his eye.dempseyfire wrote:Jones was/is routinely described as a chubby but skilled, quick-handed fighter in the vein of Tubbs/Mathis.
