I have some info on those two fights and can email it to you if you'd like. I also wrote a biography on Frank Erne that maybe of some help to you. Otherwise I might suggest you go to a library and check newspapers on microfilm on those fights, they may also be able to provide you all the info you need. You can contact me at: [email protected]

I did an on-line NYTimes search.
I couldn't find a day-after account of the 1900 bout.
I did find a day-after (May 13) account fo the 1902 bout: the referee was Charley White. The funny thing is, the paper reported a KO2 (scheduled for 20 rounds), not a 1st round KO. When he died, the NYT did a tribute to him. (NYT, Sept. 18, 1954, p. 15.) Erne reports he was knocked out in the first.
Here's his account: "I'd hardly warmed up. I made one or two feints and, bang! -- that was all -- Gans hit me with his first punch."
Here's the NYT's account of May 13, 1902, p. 6:
HEADLINE: "GANS KNOCKS OUT ERNE - Negro Pugilist Wins the Fight at Fort Erie in Two Rounds"
(paraphrasing lengthy text): "The time of the fatal second round to Erne was one minute and forty seconds... A right on the ear.. then a left broke down Erne's guard, and a second later Gans followed up his advantage by a blow on the jaw...."
Do all the record books record this as a 1st-round KO?

Ric...Herbert Goldman's 1986-87 Ring Record Book lists the fight as KO1. The 1997 Fight Fax does the same.

When I researched F. Erne I got everything from the T.S. Andrews, Everlast & Post Record Books They all list his 1902 bout as a 1 rd KO.
The Buffalo News covered the fight and an excerp from the article on the fight reads:
"A much improved Gans won the title in just 100 seconds, knocking Erne out with one punch, a right hook to the jaw, delivered with lightening speed and exact precision after exactly a minute and a half of fiddling. Ten seconds later, Erne, was counted out, the championship had slipped from his grasp and the battle was ended. "
