Radio 4 - Boxing and the Mafia
There's a radio documentary on with Bert Sugar (boy does he get around) and a number of other old timers, about the influence of the Mafia on boxing during the 'golden era.' Sounds quite interesting. I'm buggered if I can find it in the listings.

Yeah, Bert Sugar regurgitates the same old crap over and over again.MightyWarrior wrote:Used to like old Bert Sugar, when he was editor of The Ring.
But he's turned into a bore over the last 10 years or so - rent a hack.
Don't think he's come up with anything original to say since the mid 80's - too many whiskeys I guess.

It happens to most of those guys, they just become rent-a-quote. Even Muhammad Ali is a bit of a bore really, same old shtick over and over again, hasn't really come up with any new lines since about 1976.
It's that old problem, of turning into a self charicature from years of being a talking head. You end up becoming what people expect.

Hmmm..haven't heard anything too unsavioury about ol Bert, other than he never pays any of his writers.Kilburn wrote:Isn't he a bit of an old pervert? He certainly laughs like one.
Speaking of scandals, anyone remember Marv Albert? The famous NBC boxing announcer, and probably one of the best boxing commentators going.
Then someone published some photos of the poor guy prancing around in a pair of lady's knickers and it was goodbye Marv...
