A Commonwealth Title Fight- ABROAD!!!

Post by whicker »

Wow- don't see this very often, but apparantly Rob Norton will be defending his commonwealth title in Australia next.

Good to see the commonwealth title being more than a "strictly domestic" affair.

Whats the champions share of that? £12 000. 60p?

That sounds a decent enough payday.

....

hopefully he will travel for it. If he gives it up, shame- whats the point in being "Commonwealth Champion" if you don't travel the Commonwealth to defend the belt?

Dominic Vea is a very basic boxer, imagine a poor man's Danny Green!

If Norton is on form he should outbox this guy all night

12k minus trainers fee's, managers fee, promoters fee, flights, accomodation and the good old UK's TAX .... all of a sudden that 12 grand isnt going very far at all.

Apparantly they offered him more , before it went to purse bids and he turned it down ,, looks like there might be a vacant title floating around very shortly.

But surely, even allowing for deductions etc, it's still a worthwhile pay day?

50p a mile makes it sound like the travelling is a bad thing, but I think a trip to Aus would be cool.

Also, not much point having "Commonwealth Champions" really if people only fight for the belt in Britain.

£12.000 aint alot for a Cruiserweight Weight to fight for the Commonwealth Title, out of that he'd have to pay his Tax, BBBC Tax, 10% Trainer Fee, Boxing Abroad Change.. He wont come out with alot of Money from that.....

Norton's manager P J Rowson explains that the Australian promoters are apparently only willing to fund Norton + one other to travel with him and only 5 days before the fight. He explains all this during "In The Corner" on Hatton TV

What did they think was going to happen when they bid so low for the contest?

If they weren't planning on bidding very much for the fight then they should have accepted the offer, shouldn't they?

Fair enough.

At the end of the day, he is down as the Champion of the Commonwealth.

If it's got to the stage where boxers holding the commonwealth title are not prepared to defend their belt because it isn't worth it, then really the BBBoC need to perhaps question if it's worth having that title at all.
