Katsidis vs Mitchell
Katsidis vs Mitchell
Hot off the press at fight-news comes this article.
To be honest, I'm a little suprised in the lack of interest, but Mitchell is hardly a big name. What are the collective thoughts regarding this?
Promoter allegedly today won the purse bid WBO Interim lightweight champion Michael Katsidis’ defense against Kevin Mitchell. Warren’s bid of $515,000 beat the only other bid of $501,000 from Katsidis’ manager Brendon Smith from Ringstar Promotions. The clash will take place in Britain in May with the winner having to face Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez with 180 days.
Londoner Mitchell is hot off a second round knockout of Ignacio Mendoza at Wembley Arena last month and defeated Amir Khan conqueror Breidis Prescott last December.
Power-punching Australian Katsidis is well known to British fans after his five-round shoot-out against Graham Earl at Wembley Arena in February 2007 and has gone on to become one of the sports biggest stars.
Warren said, “I’m delighted that I won the purse bids for this cracking contest and I’m sure it will be an explosive encounter. Both guys are come forward, all action, fighters throwing plenty of punches so it’s hard not to see this fight developing into real war.”
Mitchell, 25, added, “Frank has done a fantastic job getting me the fight and bringing it to England. I know all about Katsidis, I’ve watched him over here against my then stablemate Graham Earl and I’ve watched all his fights on DVD. My trainer Jimmy Tibbs is the best in the business and he’ll work-out the plan to beat this guy. This is the kind of fight I’ve dreamed of since I was kid and now I’ve got it I can’t wait. The English and the Aussies have got a big rivalry and we kicked their arses last year to regain the Ashes, so I’m looking forward to kicking Katsidis’ arse to win the title.”

I wonder who Katsidis's next opponent will be reported as next week?

Re: Katsidis vs Mitchell
Wasn't Diaz signed and sealed?
A few weeks ago I thought Marquez was pretty definite and I was super pumped about that. When that fell through I was devastated, but finally came round to the Diaz rematch, which would of been awesome. Now it's changed again, I can't keep up.
Hope he gets through Mitchell and gets his crack at Marquez.

Re: Katsidis vs Mitchell
Mitchell is no mug. He is unbeaten in 31 fights, including a win over Breidis Prescott, who stopped Amir Khan in one round.
This should be a good fight.

Re: Katsidis vs Mitchell
Can't say I know much about Mitchell but just had a look at his record. Seems Katsidis will be his toughest opponent to date. Katsidis has been in some tight wars with some of the top light weights and I think this experience gives him the edge on paper and hopefully will carry him home in the fight.
Very interested to hear from people who have seen Mitchell what he brings stylistically...

Re: Katsidis vs Mitchell
Mitchell used to be a slugger but has refined his style and by all accounts looked excellent in whitewashing Prescott (I didn't see it). However I don't go along with the majority of my compatriots who are predicting a comfortable win for Mitchell. They might be reading too much into Katsidis' struggle with Earl (as I used to), but your man has improved immeasurably since then, and especially since Casamayor. And on that note, I just can't see the logic of predicting that Mitchell will do what Casamayor - one of the world's absolute best technical boxers - failed to do, and outbox Katsidis.
Mike by mid-late stoppage.

50-50 of mitchell uses his better boxing skills then i think he wins on points but if he brawls then it could go either way
heres his fight with prescott http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZEVKHtA_8o&feature=fvsr

Re: Katsidis vs Mitchell
I woke up this morning and seen this fight scheduled, since i started the last 2 threads and they fell through i decided against starting the thread
Mitchell on paper looks good, but if you sift through his opponents Katsidis has been in the ring with better fighters by a mile .
I've never been sold on Prescott, his last 2 opponents weren't either, 1 punch doesn't make a world class fighter.

Re: Katsidis vs Mitchell
Thanks guys.
Ollie - I had a browse through the UK forum and they are pretty confident in Mitchell. But I agree with you: by saying Mitchel wins easy they are basically putting Mitchell in the same bracket as Casamayor, which dosn't add up in my book.
Diggler - thanks for link. Gotta budget my internet usage but will hopefully get round to it soon.
Hounddawg - Totally with you on relative opponents. Sure Katsidis has the two losses, but Mitchell's been nowhere near guys of the calibre of Casamayor or Diaz.

Re: Katsidis vs Mitchell
Katsidis is obviously a lot more proven. We know Katsidis's level -- World class, but just a bit below the best in the division.
Mitchell is a very good boxer when he chooses to be. He tended to fall back on his good power and good chin against lower quality boxers, but against Prescott he showed he can box very well. His timing and reflexes were excellent, and he maintained a good pace with no signs of fatigue.
These guys are so close it's very hard to call a winner. Both have lots of power, good chins, good work rate, good stamina, good boxing skills. I could see either guy winning. If pushed, I'd back Katsidis, simply because he has beaten the better opposition and is more experienced at a higher level.
I do hope this fight goes ahead. It'll be very good to watch, even if both boxers opt for a technical display. Both like to fight in range.

Re: Katsidis vs Mitchell
^^ purely a technical display from Katsidis with a belt on the line and a shot at JMM up for grabs.....i don't think so.

Having just youtubed Mitchell-Prescott I concur with Oliver: Katsidis by mid-late round stoppage.

And i think people who have followed Mitchell's career from the beginning know Kat's fans could be in for a rude awakening
Kevin Mitchell is vastly underrated IMHO, he has all the tools to beat Katsidis; including good power, speed and stamina, Mitchell (who was also an exceptional amateur) also has a good boxing brain and an excellent team behind him, who will not underestimate Katsidis.
Any silly talk of an easy night for either fighter is just that; silly talk,
Mitchell and Katsidis are both warriors and on the night it'll be all about who wants it most and keeping a cool head under heavy fire!
Whatever happens one things for sure for all fight fans; it'll be the mutts nutts

There's no doubt Katsidis deserves to be the favourite in this one, I feel he would have smashed Mitchell's best opponents, Johanasson and Prescott. Should be a good fight, I'm looking forward to it.

Re: Katsidis vs Mitchell
Yep, I do. I'm just thinking that these boxers could be so close to either others' level that the preparation determines the winner. However, we don't yet know if Mitchell can reach the heights Katsidis has.Coffee Aroma wrote:LOL.............Semantics..........you know where i'm coming fromAsterix wrote:Tactics could play the biggest part.Coffee Aroma wrote:Any silly talk of an easy night for either fighter is just that; silly talk,

Re: Katsidis vs Mitchell
Seriously... when is Katsidis going to come home to fight?
Re: Katsidis vs Mitchell
is he allowed?Hounddawg wrote:Seriously... when is Katsidis going to come home to fight?
Re: Katsidis vs Mitchell
Another $15,000 USD added to the bid and Katsidis would have been fighting at home.
Re: Katsidis vs Mitchell
Katsides will be too powerful and forceful, although Mitchell will do well, initially.
It will come down to grit and bottle and Katsides has had to go through the fire alot more than Mitchell, although I dont doubt Mitchell's bottle.
Katsides will just impose his will on him, eventually.

I hear ya about the police issue but surely he has to have enough star power to get off with a slap on the wrist and a dint in his bank account!toppity wrote:is he allowed?Hounddawg wrote:Seriously... when is Katsidis going to come home to fight?
Re: Katsidis vs Mitchell
What will it take for Katsidis to be elevated to champion status, i honestly can't believe that 1 of the alphabets haven't offered him a shot at either a vacant title or there champion.
If you think about it he's never been a world champ nor held a full version of 1 of the alpha's but has had to endure fights against the best for a shitty interim version and is now entering his 5th interim world tile shot for the WBO, while Zappavigna just got the vacant IBO title on his first attempt.
Having these 2 fighters resume side by side you can see the difference in competition, but yet 1 holds a better version of a world title than the other( It ain't the interim either as IMO a vacant is a better version than the interim), Katsidis people should take note of this and after this fight, if JMM doesn't come to the party and the WBO doesn't elevate Katsidis, I'd tell them to take F#cking hike!
