I would be truly stunned if Hennessy Sports goes under - Meaty Mick is a boxing man through and through and to add to that he is a survivor who knows the business inside and out.

However - If he stays in the top echelons of the promotional business - I will be curious what happens with John Murray - if he loses Murray then he has Froch who lets face it is now fighting the elite in his division and could lose at anytime by that very virtue - and of course he has Darren Barker.

Interesting times - however Hennessy has survived far tougher times than this.

What we're seeing more and more is Promotors working together.
Hayemaker are sub contracting their contracted fighters to Frank Maloney.
Meaty Mick seems to be doing a similar thing with Barry Hearn.
These are tough times for all businesses and obviously the Promotors with the TV deals will be taking the lion's share of the proceeds but for the Promotor lacking a TV deal it at least keeps their fighters working meaning there's less chance of them jumping ship.
In addition it buys them time to secure a deal - and to get through this recession period in the hope that things come good in the long term.
It is indeed interesting times.
In the case of John Murray for instance there's no reason why he would jump ship - provided Meaty delivers on a sub contract basis.
Just means Mick will earn a smaller percentage on the Promotion.
Only Hennessey Promotions will be able to answer whether their business model can absorb that reduction in revenue.
They're all big boys, in a big World !

If Hennessy is copromoting with Matchroom perhaps some of his fighters will be on the Mcalister bill 29 Jan 10.

Sorry Pal - disagree - a move for John Murray has in my opinion been on the cards for a while - the TV situation has not helped Hennessy's cause and there is very strong links between Hatton/Murray & Gallagher.

Don't know mate but if he is, then fair enough, he can negotiate with whoever he pleases.
The point I was making is that Meaty Mick may be able to offer Murray the same oppertunities through a joint Promotional arrangement than can be offered by any other suitors.
The grass isn't always greener on the other side and as you've often advocated, Mick is very loyal to his fighters.
Will that be reciprocated ?

Hennessey has been the top promoter to me for a long time, his undercards arnt any worse than warrens but comes under alot of stick because his fights are on a wider viewed audience than warrens. he also makes his fighters successful the right way EG: brittish, commonwealther, euro and then world.

I have to agree with twenty six on this

i hope he gets a good TV deal and not just primetime unless they show his cards on the free to air basis like they can do. or that ITV will go on with the deal like they can should they be able to afford it ( though they are millions in debt) i dont see why sky doesnt show some hennessy fights on a sat with maloney or warrenn on a friday and alternate. surly sky would get megabucks from Murry, fury and froch in the future

I think Sky do a good job as it is with boxing but they could be doing more when they have the opportunity. They have four channels and have no problem showing cricket, football, golf, tennis etc every day so I don't see why they can't show boxing twice a week. The niche in the market is there, they just have to take a risk and exploit it. It would be interesting to hear what Hennessy has to say on the subject. I do like the guy from what I have seen on TV, he can't stay in his seat when one of his boxers is in the ring, it's funny at times watching him launch off his seat and nearly jump into the ring.

Alba,

No I do not think Hennessy Sports will go under or whatever the phrase is - I am not surprised during the lean TV times that "Meaty Mick" has allowed his lads to box under the Matchroom Banner and I am equally sure Hennessy will bite back at some stage with some form of TV deal.

Despite what people have stated in other threads - my own opinion is Hennessy is a boxing man through and through and will prove to his doubters to be a very good promoter - I have never had doubts on that score.

I'd love to see him get a good TV deal too, but, considering Barker is next boxing on a Matchroom undercard, it is a shame he didn't put two of his "stars" together on any of his bills last year, most notably when the Froch-Dirrell undercard was so poor. Maybe the thought of Barker and Murray or O'Donnell on the same bill might have kept audiences at their peak longer, rather than treating the audience to the likes of Phil Fury.

I think Murray and his team would be nuts to leave Hennessy i really do.

He has been brought along much better than Kevin Mitchell.. much much better

On first glance that's what I thought too.

Hennessy has gotten a bad rep over Murray of late, but the reality is much different. Mitchell was chucked in with Prescott in a sink or swim fight and came up smelling of roses. Mitchell must know that Khan leaving has cut him a massive break.

Anyway,

Kevin Mitchell - 30-0 and a 7 year pro.

John Murray - 28-0 and a 7 year pro.

Mitchell's honours: IBF inter-continental and a British title

Murray's honurs: WBC world youth champion and a British title (outright)

Mitchell has beaten: Breidis Prescott, Carl Johanneson.

Murray has beaten: Thaxton, Lawton, McAllister, Meager

Murray has boxed many a time on big cards, fought in places like the MGM, Florida, Canada. His recent run of fights have been top billing on their own show live on ITV terrestrial.

Mitchell has fought on the Haye vs Macc undercard, plus on Pavlik v Locket undercard, but generally on Excell shows in and around London on PPV. Not sure how many shows where he has headlined.

I'd say Murray has beaten the more consistent fighters. All his domestic rivals - wheras Kevin has unfortunately had to fight a few stiffs ive never heard of from the eastern bloc.

I can't comment on what they have both earned from the boxing game to date - but i'm sure i read Kevin worked on the London underground for a bit to help his income.

Kevin has another 'intercontinental' fight lined up, wheras Murray has the European title fight in his hometown of Manchester imminently.

They are both great fighters, both the same age.

But honestly? i think after actually taking a step back I believe that Murray has been fighting the better fights, getting the apprenticeship done in the proper manner and now his European shot is on the radar, if he wins he'll get a decent WBC ranking straight away for the world title shot.

Mitchell's win over Prescott was dominant and showed class. But it was only an important win in this country due to the Khan connection. It had no real bearing on world rankings.

I'm a big fan of both men, but whilst Kevin has now finally had some luck go his way (Khan leaving, WBO chance organised) it was not always like that.

On the whole career, I would agree. But Mitchell has been pushed forward well since losing a career to a bad hand injury, while Murray's career has lacked any momentum over the past 2 years, despite winning the British title. It was a big shame to see the Thaxton fight end up in a leisure centre.

No your prob right there Diggler.

But Murray wins the European title and then he's got No3 ranking with WBC.

He's only one fight away himself in theory from a title shot himself if he gets the european title.

People say Hennessy has shown himself to be "crap" when it comes to the TV side of things. Who was the first British promoter to get a terrestial TV deal with the BBC in years.

Who, when people thought ITV were going back out of boxing, got a TV deal with them?

Okay neither terrestial company have stuck - which is bad, but I am sure he will negotate something. If allegedly can get back with Sky after all the comments when he joined Setanta/ITV then I am sure Hennessy will find somewhere. He did work with Sky between those terrestial deals.

Question is, does he now have the stable size to accomodate them an "exclusive deal". Jon Thaxton was an important part of Hennessy at ITV.
