How do you rate Jimmy Bivins?

Post by Controversial »

Not a fighter that appears to get a lot written about him.

Some of the guys he beat include

Charley Burley (Bivins was 14-0 at the time)
Gus Lesnevich
Joey Maxim
Lee Savold
Ezzard Charles
Lloyd Marshall
Lee Murray
Curtis Shepherd
Archie Moore
Turkey Thompson (gave away 37lbs to Thompson)

How do you rate and rank Bivins?

I think someone here said that Jimmy Bivins was still alive ,the only living person to have fought Joe Louis(in a official bout),perhaps there are still more who sparred with him in his exhibitions.
Anyway someone should co-author a book with Jimmy Bivins life and career,if possible.

Bivins was definitely an all-time great. Tough to rate b/c he was really a light HW who fought most of his peak in the 180s, so he's kind of between divisions in terms of all-time rankings. He also fought long after his prime which diluted his record. If considered a light heavyweight he'd make my top 10 easily.

The Joe Louis-Jimmy Bivins fight was shown closed-circuit in 1951.
Has anyone seen the full 10 rounds of it?
