Here next week then off to Vegas.

One of the most pleasant people to come over i'm told. Trains like a beast, but afterwards has time for everyone. A very cheerful and outgoing guy. Polite and friendly.

Quite a story behind him. Fought his way out of the slums of Dominca, now lives in New York with his wife and children. Spends most nights talking to them.

I hope he blasts away Funeka and fulfills his potential. Then continues to train over here.

Makes it even more bizarre that he's wasted so much of his talent then. Really find it hard to reconcile this image of him with the boxer who's wasted so many years of his prime.

He knows what's required of himself now. He was losing 20lb the week before a fight and was getting through on talent, that's when he actually made the weight.

This he has come over completely on his own, no team. Locked himself away with Beard and following a Kerry Kayes diet religiously. Did 15 rounds an a 6 miles run yesterday. Tapering his weight down better than ever before.

I remember meeting a few members of Guzman's team prior to him winning the WBO Super Bantamweight title against Fabio Oliva in Cardiff Castle. They were trying to sell there ringside tickets for half price. Turns out a few years latter i met Joan at the Pacquiao-Barrera 2 card in Las Vegas he was a pretty cool guy. I actually asked him about his experience of fighting in Cardiff Castle and he said it was the best place he had fought in his career.

I think he was just trying to get too low. He used to be a massive drainer. His body kind of fought back.

Joan Guzman was at Leigh Boxing & Fitness Centre on saturday afternoon where he trained for over two hours with members of the Leigh ABC squad. After warming up with the youngsters, Joan then proceeded to spar 14 x 3 minute rounds with the boxers, before doing the pads with Lee Bead and then taking the boxers through a 45 minute technique training class and finishing with a stretching session ! After this, Joan happily posed for photos and signed autographs for everyone in the club !
A real down to earth top bloke who i'm sure would have stayed all day such was his keeness to help the youngsters. It was fantastic of both Joan and Lee to give up their time, and will be a day all at Leigh ABC will never forget.

Yep it was in the grounds of Cardiff castle on a summers night, so still light when Joan was on, I went along to that one and it really was a fantastic setting, not surprised he liked it.
Easy night for him too, when he was just signed with Warren, for about half a day.

Wasn't sure what to make of him that night, as the other guy looked a semi warmed up body, but seeing him blast out the WBO champ Sanchez a few years later made me a believer. On his night Guzman is one of the best fighters on the planet, he really has it all, and a ferocious hitter when his hands hold up too.

The kids loved it, and Guzman was absolutely brilliant with them. I am sure all the kids there will remember it for a long time.

I was present that day and also the day before when he sparred John Watson and have to say that speaking with Guzman and watching train was a priveldge

funny how the general perception - ie lazy and wasting his talent - becomes accepted almost as the truth.

Some nice insights to the contrary on this thread :TU:

Well I watched him train for several weeks at Gleason's in the summer and he was lazy then. Think Beard has given him a kick up the arse.

Gomez

He is really down to earth, spent a good few hours with the kids and has time for everyone. I spent a couple of afternoons watching him train and also chatting about boxing with him and he is a top bloke.

yeah, I dont think with his past weight problems etc... this is just a general perception. I think he may have had a shock in the Funeka fight, he isnt invinclible, att 33 its time to work.
