Which Current/Ex Boxers Have You Met?

Post by Jedi Knight »

Personally I've met:

Richi Woodhall (Sprott/Williams fight) Really nice guy, very approachable.

Micheal Sprott (In my own Gym..!!) Bound to bump into him sometime being a Reading boy. Again very friendly guy, chatted for ages.

Micheal Gomez (Haye/Mock fight) Seemed OK, had about three young girls with him..

Ojay Abrahams (Hatton/Rowsell fight) Was wearing a black sleevless string vest type thing....looked really nice.. :-? A bit full of himself.

Nigel Benn (Harrison/McCafferty fight) well I didn't actually talk to him but got up close and waved then he bowed)

Junior Witter (Hatton/Rowsell fight) slouched over a couple of seats at ringside, didn't really wanna talk but shook me and a mate's hand)

I think that's about it...unless a remember some more..

yeah met ojay too, matt skelton who was very appraochable, williams and wayne alexander in the pub accross the road from the york hall.

he was 8) ce just coming off his win over tak and a genuinely funny bloke.

i can wax lyrical about who ive played cricket against might be more intewrsting (and when i say played i mean faced / played against).

Gus fraser, darren gough, phil tuffnell, mike gatting, wasim akram, mohammed azzarudhin, mark ramprakash, courtney walsh, dion nash, phil symonds.

theres more but i cant remeber em all, play ina six a side tournament at finchley every year thats a charity thing.

wasim was coming off about five yards and was still quick as all heck. took 18 off a gus frazer over (mostly through the slips but a couple of nice cover drives!) :TU:

also played regional rugby at schools level against Steve ojomoh and Ade Adebayo also was skippered by Darren crompton who went on to gain england colours!

You still can't beat the York Hall for meeting fighters. The last time I went (a couple of years back when Chacon fought Polo) I met Danny Williams, Justin Jukko, Alex Arthur all very nice people.

That's why I've felt bad criticising Danny lately, he was a nice bloke when I met him and I'm sure he still is.

Ricky Hatton - at his afterfight party in Manchester, got him to sign my ticket (Pederson fight) - then i gave it away to one of me mates when i was pissed up

David Haye - at Johnson - Woods 2, i was talking to him, but i dont think he was at all interested cos he had some blonde bird with him (a stunner she was)

Carl Thompson - well i never really chatted to him, he was walking into the arena and in a pissed up moment i shouted "beat Rothmans ass", i like to think to this day that them words inspired him to that victory :D

Met Paul Ingle in a boozer/nightclub in Scarborough about a month before he fought Billy Hardy. He was with a load of mates and didn't want mindless chit chat. Actually, I seem to remember he was in the process of ignoring me but my sister told him I like boxing so he stopped and said hello. A couple of my mates were in the same year as him at school.

I'd have liked to have met Sonny Liston. Might look out for him in the next life.....

I've met Micheal Fish as well, but he's obviously not a boxer.

Lloyd Honeyghun - At the Naz vs Robinson bill.

Carl Thompson - Same place, great chat with him there.

Terry Marsh - Playing for a Charity Arsenal side against a local village team after a player from the local team had died whilst playing. Good player actually. Spoke a bit, my father wanted to ask questions that I won't delve into here.

Gary Mason - Same game - didn't talk much to me as he was hounded by youngsters. Big man.

Barry McGuigan - Hamed vs Robinson Bill, gent, legend.

Nicky Piper - Did a segment for HTV news about the spilt amongst the organisations in Welsh amateur boxing (WABF/WABA). Did it at my local gym during training night, because my ex coach was also on did a section on it (as one of the main activitists in the controvesy). Good proffessional, didn't have alot of time. Shook everyones hand and just said "treat it as a normal training session" gave everyone signed pictures at the end.

Scot Gammar - He used to regularly come down to the gym, and I have done a few light rounds with him (very light - thank god). Got a bit of a reputation but from my limited experience seems a bit harsh. Also, used to (perhaps still does) do a bit of bouncing at some of the night clubs around my local area, so would see him there also. He would always say hi to me. His father helped out alot at the local club.

Felix Savon, met him and a couple of the other Cuban boxers at the Sydney olympics, nice guys, don't know what they said as i don't speak spanish.

Also Fenech , he was a nice guy as well , signed programme for me, Evander Holyfield shook hands with me, but his bouncers wouldn't let you have a pic or really talk to him.

I cheated about the Micheal Fish bit....I really am a weatherman. I was at work and Micheal Fish stood behind for a couple of minutes. He was less talkative than Paul Ingle was when I met him. Looked greyer in real life than on telly! He wouldn't make it into my top ten of weather personalities that I've met!!

But I do digress.....

I was going to list which boxers I'd like to have met, but whenever I've met non-weather personalites I become tongue tied so it's probably best not meeting any boxers!!

I'd love to meet Johnny Nelson and ask him why he didn't do a bit more for just one round against Carlos De Leon. He'd have won the fight then!

Johnny Nelson's the only boxer i've ever met. Me and me mates got a photo with him after the Hatton-Tackie fight, his missus took the photo. Very nice chap as it turns out, but then I went and lost the fornicating camera! I've also seen David Burke and Paul Smith Jnr in my local boozer.
