I am a complete beginner boxer bout 6 feet tall any advice?

Post by kurtk0210 »

I just started boxing at the Detroit Jungle Boxing Gym in Detroit. I'm 6 feet tall and they say i have really hard hands. Any advice on what i should do? Mostly they say i gotta work on footwork and movement. Any advice on when i should start sparring and stuff?

Listen to your coaches. They know you better than we do.

well they are right listen to your coach but how much do you weight also makes a difference. if your a heavyweight your not very tall you say your heavy handed so you might become more of a brawler. if your weight is like a welterweight then you can become a puncher boxer you could be the next paul williams (A BEAST) LOL

When you say complete beginer, how long have you trained? What is your weight? It is going to take you about five years to become a good journeyman boxer. In that time you will learn and your coaches will be able to tell you if you are going to be good, or great. Listen to your coaches.

If you are a Novice fighter, get in really good shape physically. Be able to outlast your oponent. For the first dozen fights or so physical condition is more important that technique. That and being able to listen to your corner and apply his advice.

Couple of pointers.
run. start with a mile a day, and eventually go to three miles a day. More would be better.
When sparring or fighting keep your mouth shut. breathe through your nose.
your physical condition will be the most important part of your training till you get your ability built up.
Do not close your eyes. Do not lead with your chin.

Do not let your opponent fight his fight. If he is a puncher, make him catch you. If he is a boxer, make him back up. If he is a counter puncher, make him come to you. Do not let your opponenet fight the way he likes to fight or is good at. This is harder than it sounds, you opponent will be good at fighting his fight and making you fight his fight.

When the going gets tough don't quit! Stick at it, even though you may be getting you're butt kicked in sparring with more experienced boxers. That's the hardest thing when you seem to be training hard and getting nowhere. Stick at it and you'll reap the rewards. Good luck!
