For Junior boxers, the big two are the National Junior Olympics
Leads to international competition and US rankings.
and National Silver Gloves
Ranked only by Silver Gloves and does not lead to international competition. However, this tournament does provide excellent competition - I just wish they would change the ages to coincide with the JOs - rather confusing and since the rules state the round minutes are determined by the younger boxer, doesn't always allow 15 year olds to box 2 minutes, or 13 year olds to box 1-1/2 minutes.

Oh Dennis, you and your facts. I was tired when I posted. That's my excuse and I'm sticking too it. Ernie Garza = National Golden Gloves Champion

There are a lot of invitationals that are great for a boxer wanting more experience: Ringside, Desert Showdown, Black Gloves, Ohio State Fair, Mayor's Cup, Title, Gene Lewis, etc., but do not lead to anything more than being a champion of that tournament. If I were a boxer with the goal of making the U.S. Olympic team, competing at the U.S. Championships, National PAL and Golden Gloves would be a priority.
Yeah, I like the international competition part. If you are a national champion you should have a chance to represent the nation in competition. In an Olympic year, I agree with your picks too.

Mel, at the Silvers I heard they are considering changing the age divisions and adding 9 year old making ur wish come true with 9/10 div, 11/12 div, 13/14 div and 15/16 div. Make sense to me. Have you heard anything about this?

Would you guys agree that the top NATIONAL TOURNAMENT for the JO's is the Junior Olympics and for OPEN MEN the US CHAMPIONSHIPS? By top I mean the tournament that actually determines the top boxers in the country.

Nope - but I'll ask Pat Zanders. Makes sense to me and I hope it's true. Better for the boxers and it gives the 16 year olds another national tournament.

JOs for 15/16 year olds - yes. For open class boxers, other will argue the Golden Gloves but I think it's debatable either way. I would say US Championship.

Golden Gloves, as an entity, does not offer international competition at the same level that USA Boxing does. To me, that's a big difference. Generally speaking, the same elite class of boxers compete in the Championships, the GG and the PAL.

Is it rare for a boxer to win both? Jo's & US Championships or pretty common? I wouldn't know where to begin to look.

Not rare at all. There is a listing of all champions, JO and Elite, as an appendix in the rule book - if you can find the rule book. :(

Is it rare for a boxer to win both? Jo's & US Championships or pretty common? I wouldn't know where to begin to look.
Not rare at all. There is a listing of all champions, JO and Elite, as an appendix in the rule book - if you can find the rule book. :(
Mel - I wouldn't say it is exactly common though. Many JO champs never win an elite title, but you are correct a fair number do.

Not very many do it their first year in the open class. It usually takes a couple of years.

As far as the rulebook goes, it is easy to find. Right on USA Boxing's homepage of their website they have a blue box that says "Download USA Boxing's Rulebook". Once you click on that box, it will take you to another page where there are two PDF files that can be downloaded under a heading "Attachments". Choose the "2008 rulebook" file which is the most current rulebook as it has the early 2009 revisions.

Couldn't find it yesterday. Maybe "they" don't like me? :box:

Ranked only by Silver Gloves and does not lead to international competition. However, this tournament does provide excellent competition - I just wish they would change the ages to coincide with the JOs - rather confusing and since the rules state the round minutes are determined by the younger boxer, doesn't always allow 15 year olds to box 2 minutes, or 13 year olds to box 1-1/2 minutes.
Mel, at the Silvers I heard they are considering changing the age divisions and adding 9 year old making ur wish come true with 9/10 div, 11/12 div, 13/14 div and 15/16 div. Make sense to me. Have you heard anything about this?
Ray Rogers told me there are no plans to do this. So there you have it. Maybe me asking planted the seed. Lol.

It would be nice if the age groups would correspond.

Office Depot Business CC works much better. So I'll just go ahead and save the ink on my $50 ink cartridge.

For me it is clear that the US Championships and the National Golden Gloves are 1 and 2...the National Sports Festival (back in my day they had it) was up there, too...the PAL is big, too...and the Eastern and Western Trials in EVERY year was always a big deal, always attracted the good comp...however, when I hear about a young hot shot kid who is a "9 time national champion" well, I say NONSENSE...certain tournaments are very reputable and/or prestigious (Ringside for example, much like the Ohio State Fair back in my day was) is a nice event and you can face some tough comp, definitely...but it just doesnt compare to the US Championships and NGG...
