hideous purses paid by promotors...
Re: hideous purses paid by promotors...
The boxer employs the manager/agent it's up to the fighter to get someone decent, and they should ask before they accept the fight what the money is, so if it's enough, everyone is happy
Re: hideous purses paid by promotors...
Nightmare Roy it was £3,000, fortunatly He won and changed Promotor. Then earned a few qiud.

Exactly. Thats why the argument that all of todays great US Heavyweights chase the dollar in the NBA and NFL is a non-starter.Rocky Balboa wrote:If the prime Tyson was around today, his earnings, sponsorships, etc, etc, would be off the wall! Remember, back in the day, Tyson did commercials for Budweiser, Japanese beer, Nintendo, LAPD, NYPD, Pepsi, etc. He was a massive commodity!yiddo14 wrote:And people say all the money is the NFL or NBA!Rocky Balboa wrote:Tyson got $25,000,000 for McNeeley. What makes it even more amazing is that Tyson had been inactive for four years & it was his rfirst fight on the comeback trail! Name another fighter who would have received that sort of purse after four years out?
There cannot be many, if any at all!
Well thats the argument put forward by US fight fans trying to explain why they haven't had a great Heavyweight since Holyfield.
Imagine a prime Tyson fighting today? Would earn double what Beckham and Tiger Woods earn a year combined.
The Heavyweight Championship is still potentially the richest prize in sport.
If I remember rightly, in 1996, he was the highest paid sportsman, earning something in the region of $100,000,000 or near that figure anyway. That was just his earning's & does not take into consideration any other deals!
No one would make more money in the sporting world than a truly great, charismatic Heavyweight Champion.
Imagine how much a prime Ali would earn a year!
Re: hideous purses paid by promotors...
I had 3 girls from Europe that came to fight me when i was fighting and Mickey Helliet brought a couple in to fight Scott Quigg and Mark Thompson Carl Greaves just recently promoted and brought one in for 3k Not sure who he was fighting though Carl post on here so sure he will tell us.Londonirish wrote:princess wrote:[

But does it really matter who they were fighting the point is if the promoter is being charged 3k and the boxer isnt getting it Theres a problem
Re: hideous purses paid by promotors...
Why don't you compare the average salary of the top American heavyweights over the past 20 years with the top Americans in other major league sports, and you will find the boxers make less money. Superstars like Tyson, Ali come around once in a blue moon and guys like Michael Jordan, Alex Rodriguez, and stars in other sports have made similar amounts.yiddo14 wrote:Exactly. I wonder how much Eddie Chambers will be payed for fighting Klitschko? He is arguably a top five heavyweight. If he was a top five basketball player he would probably make $10 million a year. There is money to be made in boxing, but there are more people getting rich in the NBA,NFL, MLB, and NHL.

Yeah i think it does the better the opponent the more they should get, i couldnt see you bringing in and paying that much for a 2-0 thats not a big pospect... That's why i wanted to know who they were fighting.princess wrote: But does it really matter who they were fighting

Re: hideous purses paid by promotors...
I agree there is clearly more people getting richer in the NBA or the NFL than those in the Heavyweight Division, I merely use Tyson and Ali as examples of what could be earned by truly great heavyweights.
It's annoys me when people argue that the NFL is full of potentially great boxers. It's based on them being big and strong. I argue there are as many potential Heavyweight Champions working the doors of nightclubs up and down the country as there are in the NFL.
Sure, there might be a few guys running around in the NBA or NFL etc who could have made todays top 50 had they taken boxing seriously, but who cares? The divison isn't lacking in trial horses and fringe guys, it lacks genuine, bonafide superstars.
Anyway, a "sportsman" who thinks along the lines of 'well I could be a great boxer but it's easier to make money eslewhere' would never, ever, ever become a great boxer in the first place. It takes a certain "specialness" if you like.
Overall though, I certainly agree that Boxers, in the main, are horribly underpaid.

you pay 3k on small hall shows for 6x3 yet colin kenna was only offered 2k to fight tyson fury over 6x3 on live t.v fook me and the big boys wonder why there fighters cant get matched when oppostion fighters can get more than there paying for a less risk fight
2K for that fight is awful though, no wonder Hennessy struggles
Re: hideous purses paid by promotors...
a well known journeyman told me, not so long ago, that it was not unknown during his career, for part of his (the journeymans) purse to come from the purse of the home fighter, otherwise the home fighter would not get a fight. this was in circumstances when the promoter had dug his heels in and refused to pay the money (2K for instance) that the journeyman was demanding for the fight. the promoter might for instance only want to pay 1.6k .... so therefore the home fighter would find himself 400 quid short. HAS ANYONE ELSE COME ACROSS THIS HAPPENING?

What you say about attitude towards money is spot on an ex fighter told me this "why would these young big guys get into boxing, you could be the 100th best NFL player in the US and you'll earn more than the 5th best Heavy weight boxer in the world".yiddo14 wrote:I agree there is clearly more people getting richer in the NBA or the NFL than those in the Heavyweight Division, I merely use Tyson and Ali as examples of what could be earned by truly great heavyweights.

I remember being at a show where the promoter didn't get enough people through the door and was walking round telling the boxers they were getting a paycut so he wouldn't lose money. The boxers were told if they didn't take the cut he wouldn't use them again.
Re: hideous purses paid by promotors...
no didnt report it to the board i was green it was only my 2nd pro fight when i look back now im fuming i didnt say anything its not first time he has done this to someone he never paid one boxer on one of his sunday shows.princess wrote:Did you report it to the board???danh wrote:yes this happend to me i was paid 200 quid off steve wood on sky show when david haye boxed at altrincham all my purse went to my opponent i was left with 200 quid and i was suppose to be the home fighter cant remember the lads name i boxed i will look him uprhino222 wrote:a well known journeyman told me, not so long ago, that it was not unknown during his career, for part of his (the journeymans) purse to come from the purse of the home fighter, otherwise the home fighter would not get a fight. this was in circumstances when the promoter had dug his heels in and refused to pay the money (2K for instance) that the journeyman was demanding for the fight. the promoter might for instance only want to pay 1.6k .... so therefore the home fighter would find himself 400 quid short. One of my boxers Martin Robins was offered £200 to box Chris Brophy on a big show in Altricham
He was quiet happy to take it just to get the win But without the matchmaker knowing The promoter made up his money to £400 still not a lot I know but better than £200 and he got the win

Danny Harding is well known in Manchester for jumping from gym to gym telling lies and ended up with no one wanting to train him because of his attitude which included also telling lies about his weight , a reason why I gave him his contract back. I gave him his contract back after he had yet again come in over weight , which left me paying for his opponent wages without a fight . Another lie from Danny and his father in law when I released him was the promise they would pay me the 2 lots of medicals owed to me , I am still waiting !!
The truth of this is that he was looking for a fight , I tried to get him on the show but the promoter said it was full and would only put him on if he covered the purses with tickets sales . I spoke with both Danny and his trainer at the time Joe Pennington and Danny agreed that he would sell the tickets to cover both the purses. He sold enougth to pay his opponent and had £200.00 over for himself , the deal was kept by the promoter who did not want the fight anyway.

Re: hideous purses paid by promotors...
i still see everybody saying the same thing about you in boxing nothing changes, i hope every bit of bad luck comes your way think we no who lies cos theres a few people who would vouch for that cannon fodder
Re: hideous purses paid by promotors...
I was the trainer who brought the boxer along who Steve Wood is on about and when the lad came in overweight good as gold he paid the lad i was bringing in full no questions asked and he didnt have to fight.
Also on the blackpool show just gone my fighter was top of the bill and it got cancelled steve only had to sort expenses for my guy as the show never went on ,but instead he sent down a very nice amount for my lad.
I dont know the sides of this story but thats my experiance of dealing with Mr Wood and hes been more than fair every time.
