I remember reading a story about Evander Holyfield once and it mentioned a guy named Womack that dominated the amateur scene and gave Holyfield a lot of trouble. I don't know why, except I've always been curious as to why I have never heard of the guy as a pro. Have any of you ever heard of him and what might have happened to him?
Ricky Womack from Detroit came out of the Kronk gym and was regarded at one time as the best amatuer 178 pouder in the world. He knocked out the reigning worl champion from Cuba in the first round.
He was edged out by his great rival Holyfield in the 84 box-offs in a very tough fight.
Womack Turned pro shortly thereafter and ran up a half dozen or so wins
He then got in trouble with the law ...armed robbery and attempted murder ....I think it was
Anyway Womack was packed off to jail for 15 or so years..
He got out recently and resumed his boxing career..
He added a few more wins to his ledger but then commited suicide because he was having trouble adjusting to life on the outside.
All in all a very sad tale of squandered talent....
