Yes, Oscar and Shane both missed out on Kostya at 140, a great shame, however there was a brief window when it could have happened. Oscar moved up to welter in 1997-98, and Kostya lost his title in 1997. So it had to happen in 1996.

In 1994-1995 (about the only time the fight could have happened) Nelson was near the end of his career and DLH was already struggling to make Super Feather, don't see that matchup as being one that was ducked at all. I don't recall much call for it either.

The one I agree with is Winky. That's the guy NOBODY wanted to fight, certainly not Oscar or Shane, and I think both of them knew they would have lost to Winky, he's too big and strong for both of them, and too good technically.

I'm not a big fan of Oscar, but anyone that thinks he is, or was a fraud are just completely biased! De La Hoya has fought the toughest competetion of any fighter in the last decade and has won titles in five different weight classes, nothing fraud about that and that is exactly why he will probably be a first ballot Hall of Famer when his time comes! In actuality, De La Hoya should only have two defeats...the first Mosley bout and the Hopkins bout! He should have won the second Mosley bout easily, but should have really easily won the Trinidad bout and Trinidad is my favorite boxer of the last decade! De La Hoya is old school in that he has never been afraid to fight anyone and there are a hell of a lot of boxers who should follow in his footsteps, if they did boxing in general would be a lot better of and not dying out like it is!

Put it this way, whenever Oscar had the chance to go for a soft WBO champ, that's the route he took.

Nelson was WBC chanp at 130 - who did Oscar go for? Bredahl, the WBO champ.

Next stop 135, and takes a vacant WBO title by beating an ancient Jorge Paez....

Yes he eventualy met some of the best, but it took awhile.

And he ducked a Whitaker rematch, after getting a very lucky points win.

By the way, Hoya had to fight Paez because the other lightweight title holders wanted nothing to do with him and when they finally did, well you saw what happend to Rafael Ruelas! Oscar has never had the option to duck anyone and because every single fighter from 160 to 135 wants to fight him natuarally he may miss a few fighters, but he has never dodged the toughest!

I respect him for standing up and fighting the best but he hasn't beaten any of them

Vargas was his best win, Chavez was faded, he lost to Trinidad, Hopkins, Mosley (twice)

To be fair though, Oscar was pretty inexperienced back then, he went into title fights in what, his 12th fight?

The list of fighters he went on to face, suggest that he was anything but a coward.

It would be a contradiction if De La Hoya failed to fight the toughest, but he didn't. Since De La Hoya is moving back down to welterweight, perhaps Tszyu can move up, or perhaps he don't want to!

No I'd never refer to ODH as a coward, far from it. But he was very carefuly moved - didn't take on Quartey until Ike looked shot in his pevious fight for instance ( maybe say the same for Vargas )

I would have loved to see Oscar/Tszyu at 140. I remember telling people at the time that there was a Russian out there who'd give ODH hell if they met - but then Kostya went and blew it v Phillips.

Could still happen, who knows...there's talk of Oscar moving down again to 147 isn't there?

De La Hoya and Azumah Nelson have three common opponents, Jesse James Leija, who went to the wire with Nelson in 4 bouts, De La Hoya demolished him in two. Genaro Hernandez out-pointed Nelson, but De La Hoya dominated Hernandez. Pernall Whitaker soundly out-pointed Nelson, but Oscar out-pointed Whitaker in a close bout!

As to Tszyu again in common Leija, who both defeated, but Oscar did so more impressively. Miguel A. Gonzalez lost to both on points, of which I think Tszyu had the best of. Chavez, same scenario, but both Chavez and Gonzalez were recycled De La Hoya opponents and had quite a few more miles on them by the time Tszyu beat them! Tszyu did blow it against Phillips, who was destroyed by Quartey, who Oscar beat handily in a ballsy fight!

De La Hoya did miss Winky Wright, but so did every one else for a number of years, so it wasn’t just Oscar!

De La Hoya is a modern legend, end of story. I'm aware of this argument people throw up every so often about taking the WBO option first, yada yada, look at the CV as a whole, littered with numerous other modern hall of famers.

Almost incomparable in modern times...

And Bubi doesn't know boxing, he knows about European Heavyweights...

It's in my interview at max, when I spoke to Kostya Tszyu, he said that himself and Oscar had already discussed the possibility of making the fight. He was very keen on the idea, and described it as 'one for the history books.'

Kostya and Oscar have been friends since their amateur days, and apparently see eachother fairly regularly still.

after getting two beatings in a weight class where man´s boxing starts he is again looking for the easy way to win some payed fights. no problem for him, he got 30 millions for having no chance in two fights vs real men.

De La Hoya is a natural welterweight, if that, who moved up too heavy in weight, which can be seen by any intelligent person who saw how small he was at the middleweight limit...understand goat!

Add Gatti to that list, did a great job on him but Gatti has never been as good as some people make him out to be anyway.

And in a total contradiction of what i said...Mosley II and Trinidad were both down to the wire decisions so perhaps he is great after all

The 1st Mosley fight was a great fight and there was 1 round in it, the 2nd fight was a robbery, so was the trinidad fight in my opinion.

I do agree that Oscar is perhaps overrated, but there's no way he's a coward.
