You obviously have no idea nor appreciation of the increasable resilience of the human body. We, as a species, have a gestation period of 9 months and have, as an average, one and a bit offspring at a time yet there are close to 7 billion of us. Hardly the sort of figures that favour delicate flowers don't you think, think about it.
I have no idea how they breed 'em down under but if a pro boxer - especially one of my gargantuan weight - gave me a full-blooded hook to the body whilst wearing 10oz gloves, I'd expect to have my ribs broken.

 Maybe, Ive had ribs broken twice, once, in the ring, by the only guy I ever fought who was smaller than me believe it or not :-? The other time was a spinning heal kick to the sternum so was to be expected, but they are amazingly hard to break on a youthful, healthy individual. I've tried many a time

I'm sure all of us would fight Haye for a million, the problem is all of us would have our purses withdrawn at the lack of effort we show!

I mean, its going to look dodgy after all the hype in the buiild up etc when I merely walk out after the 1st bell to fall straight on the floor, facefirst before Haye is even in punching distance!

Do you know what would happen if you, as a non-boxer, went in a ring with any decent fighter above middleweight wearing 10oz gloves? Any punch to the head would likely break your neck - have you ever been hit flush by someone who knows what they are doing?

Any punch to the body would probably break your ribs.

Its just a stupid thing to say. It really winds me up.

If a professional boxer with years of hard training and experience can get ko'd and unfortunately in rare cases not recover, then what chance would a non boxer like me have, i think it would end in tears and wouldn't like to take the chance thankyou.

Fair enough, you probably would get KO'd pretty smartly but any punch to the head would break one's neck? Any punch to the body would break one's ribs? Bullshit. Sensationalist, uneducated, ill-informed bullshit.

Why would it KILL someone who wasn't a pro boxer, or cause them sever injuries? Boxers are fitter, more skilled, of course, but they're no less mortal. Sure, the average person would more likely get KO'd, sure, because they wouldn't know about stance, positioning, head movement, or have the same neck muscles, but they're not more likely to get actually killed!
Are you seriously saying that with no boxing experience i could get in with lewis/tyson, get knocked out and get up unharmed or that i would be in no more danger of suffering severe injury than a pro boxer, come on get real a man who lives in my town was knocked out with one punch a year ago and was in a coma for months and now neads help for the rest of his life, the person who hit him was a big fella but by no means a boxer
As I said, it is the lack of boxing experience which would increase the likelihood of them getting knocked out, but the MORTAL danger would surely be no greater, assuming the pro boxer wasn't allowed to whale away on a defenceless target.

As for your example, street fights are an entirely different situation.

A non-boxer is DEFINITELY more likely to get killed for all sorts of plainly obvious reasons. They are no less mortal generally, of course, but they are less likely to get in a completely unprotected position and far more likely to be stronger and fitter.
Again, the protected position and strength and fitness are factors in the likelihood of a knockout, but not in inflicting life-threatening damage.

If anything, wouldn't the non-boxer be in LESS danger of being killed, because it would take fewer punches to KO him, i.e. less total head trauma?

I understand the logic of these statements but disagree with both, especially the first.

There's only one way to find out. I think you should volunteer. If you don't get killed, then I will have the pleasure of being right. If you do, then you will be vindicated in death. :DDD

Sorry if I come across as bullying, I certainly don't mean to. But getting punched by a world level heavy, in a ring, with gloves on, whilst facing him and expecting said punch would put you at serious risk of a fatality? Would surely break your neck/ribs? Come on, have a good, hard think about it. KO is a likely outcome, agreed. World of pain? Almost a certainty. Broken nose/cheekbone/jaw/ribs? Granted, a possibility but not an odds on sure thing. Broken neck? Ridiculous. A fatality being an odds on chance? Pffft. More chance of dying in a street fight against a non boxer, in fact I'd say more chance of dying whilst driving your car to the said fight with your world level heavy. I am, of course assuming we're talking about an under 50y.o. everyman. I reckon the biggest life threatening risk would be a heart attack.

Sorry hurlock, I didn't mean to imply that you said break the neck or ribs, that was some one else's comment that I was referring to.

Funny you say that about the street fight. A mate of mine, Jerry, a local cruiser weight boxer/kickboxer with about a dozen or so (mainly boxing) fights under his belt, decided to carry the night on after we went to the fights. I went home as it was Mothers' Day the following day and I have a family.

An hour after I said good bye Jerry was dead. He didn't even make it to hospital. He got into an argument with a smaller guy out the front of a night club. This guy had never been in the ring and wasn't much of a fighter in general.

The guy felt intimidated and feeling backed into a corner landed one on Jerry's chin causing Jerry to fall backwards and hit the back of his head on the concrete foot path. The rest is history. I'd take my chances with Tyson in a ring with gloves, canvass, matting, sprung floor ropes and turnbuckle pads for a large payday and bragging rights over an unknown on the harsh streets with no ref etc. for nothing.

What a sad story mate.

Life can be fragile in those circumstances, for sure. Some people, especially daft kids, don't understand the damage they can do - even if they don't mean it.

Precisely. I avoid any kind of fighting outside of a boxing context for precisely that reason.

Last night at Mayweather v Mosley when Ali was announced to the crowd one of the English guys in my group started chanting "Ali Kum Bye Ah".

Made me chuckle.

"why did he get a tattoo?"
"eh, probably because he wanted to"
"but will that not make him an easy target now?"
