basically I've had a job offer there (just a 6 month contract) but having never really been there I'm trying to get an idea of what the place is like, nice people? decent pubs? local crack epidemic? etc etc...

bear in mind the place I'd be picking up sticks from is sunny Croydon so providing its not over-ran with teenagers driving Corsas and stabbing people I dare say it'll be an improvement.

Any comments are most appreciated !!!!

I don't care for it much, bit dismal. Some lovely countryside nearby, like Snape, but Ipswich is pretty grim to my eye.

About 10 years ago my dad told me that Ipswich had the highest murder rate per capita in the UK, don't know if it's still true, but he says there's still a lot of fights in town. Probably no more so than any medium sized town in England though.

Its better than Croydon - but EVERYWHERE is an hour away.

thx JamesMc, like you say probably no worse for fighting than any other town. Wonder how they feel about northeners, hope there's no grudge there. Like I said my current place is Croydon and I moved here from Widnes (nr. Liverpool), so my standards aren't exactly sky high to start with :)

I think you'll feel fairly at home if you live in Croydon, but the difference is Suffolk has probably the most beautiful rural landscapes in England, it's quite breathtaking, not quite as a dramatic as the south downs or the yorkshire moore's or the lake district, but pretty impressive nontheless, real chocolate box stuff in places.

Dunno if the great outdoors is your thing, but it's worth seeing if you live there.

I'm a northerner, born and bred Tyke. I've survived for almost decade down here. Mind you, the beer prices still grate. While the beer taste is not great.

As for you FG - get some new material, please.

Really? I have family there. Strange place. Not much to do during the day, and rough as arseholes at night. I once walked through town and back to get cash out at 10 o'clock on a Friday night and saw 6 seperate fights.

I wouldn't mind (I started drinking on Union Street in Plymouth when it was still very 'lively') but most of the drinking establishments seem to be poncey bars.

Still, I haven't been in about 3 years, so it could all be different.

As and when my missus' mad great uncle dies, she ( / I) will be inheriting a farm in Cavendish - quite near Haverhill. Currently trying to persuade her to let me turn it into a training camp. She's going down the 'wedding venue' line.

Actually, currently trying to sneak up behind the old feller and burst a balloon but I'm no ballerina on the old toes.

Lovely countryside, yes. Not quite up to the Ribble Valley, but that's where I'm from so I'm biased.

Salisbury isn't rough, since all the squaddies buggered off. Southampton can be though. It's getting like Portsmouth there.
