Claude Abrams often did that, which admittedly I thought was odd, but assumed he just had an awesome memory, and obviously his track record speaks for itsels. No comment on the others you referred to, though.
Spud wrote:my reply back to that one is that its f*cking sad boxing is playing second fiddle to f*cking toffs prancing around on their horses (dressage), tiddliwinks, and invariably some goofy c*nt who has just caught a big fish!!! - we might then get a bit of variety and someone will tell us about Tennis - a sport we have consistently failed in and that silly miserable **** in Scotland still hasnt won a slam but yet boxing despite having numerous WORLD champions is still regarded as the minority of all minority sports.
Of course I agree with you, but what you have to understand is that those sports, regardless of their success rates in Britain, will have their fans who are just as passionate about their sport as we are about theirs. It is literally impossible to please everybody. If anything, I'd say its the football coverage that needs to be scaled back so that the "lesser" sports get more of a show. For example, when I worked at the Welsh Daily Post, usually when there was a Welsh boxer boxer fighting for a British title or better, they would still give precedence to English football. In fact, unless the boxer was Calzaghe or, to a lesser extent, Maccarinelli, there was no guarantee a Welsh boxer would get a mention at all.

Not always that easy, unfortunately. I was boxing correspondent of the Daily Telegraph for 6 years to 2006, but it didn't give me any great advantage and I certainly couldn't dictate to anybody. You rang in with your story, the sports news desk guy listened, and depending on how interested he was (and a lot of that was down to whether or not he had heard of whoever it was you wanted to write about) he gave you the number of words he wanted. If it was 300 or less you knew you were in trouble, it could turn out to be a filler by the end of the day. I once interviewed Chris Eubank exclusively, at his request, in Claridge's for 2 hours. I came away with what I thought was a brilliant piece that might even make a centre page feature at a weekend, rang in - and they weren't interested. I filed a piece and attempted to persuade them that people would be interested in it, but it never saw light of day. Very embarrassing but it's just the way it works.
Thank you for the reply. :TU:

it wouldnt, it was on a web site. Easily chnaged.

"a mistake is a mistake"

so if I said "mike tyson was knocked out by peter buckley"

it would be the same as if I said

"the ref scored the fight was 98-97" (when it was actually 98-96)

I said it in the other thread on this topic.... I really don't think the coverage of boxing in the press is THAT bad.

Spud you mention dressage quite often.... when exactly is it covered. Once every 4 years or when a good looking British Royal wins and all. Ask the average person in the street who the world champion Dressager (is that the right term is) - they wouldn't have a clue.... Why? Cause it is simply NOT covered at all.

Boxing gets 4 regular columns (weekly) in the Nationals...... thats a shit load more than others.

It Football that needs scaling back, not other minority sports...... nope, I aint a middle class toff who appreciates these - although I will watch all sports on TV. I am saying that cause they don't have much coverage.

Cricket, Rugby and Football, Horse Racing and Formula 1.... these sports get more than boxing. 2 of these are out national sports, 2 are massive business, and England recently won the Rugby world cup.

Tennis gets alot during Wimbledon and for the four slams..... it gets less during the regular season. You mention that Murray is miserable and never slammed. Its a little different to boxing..... you don't have weight categories or multiple world champions. Its essentially a P4P title... and Murray is in the upper echelons P4P essentially.

Dressage and other minority sports gets zilch.

GOD  .... Just to let you know that I have been posting on here for a few years now but under a different name, so I have watched the thread grow from the start. All I am getting at is people do make mistakes and yes I agree the one in the Sun should not have happened, but as you have proved by not checking the facts before going to print and yes the show has been promoted as being held at the Goresbrook Centre for over a month now, not everyone is perfect......... it doesn't matter how big or small the mistake is it still is a mistake.(yours could of resulted in sending fans to Brentwood instead of Goresbrook last night, I guess the promoter wouldn't of been happy with that) This subject is getting really boring now so let's stop having a pop at the reporters as they are the ones who keep boxing in the national press. :TU:

Stu - are you are boxing fan??

I ask because if you were in a court of law I wouldnt want to have to rely on you for your support in the defence of boxing!!

In addition - you are I gather quite an intelligent chap - in my rant I generalise and pluck sports out of thin air in my frustration that a great sport like boxing - one of the most popular ones in the working class and middle class people of this country yet the very papers who cover those people are in my opinion p*ss poor at covering the sport in comparison to others.

Stu - its like anything in life you can make excuses after excuses - I am completely and utterly passionate about boxing and regardless of what you and the many other highly intelligent chaps state on here - I honestly see no reason why we cannot have more coverage in the papers on a daily basis - by papers I mean the tabloids as the broadsheets on the whole have the space to do what they want.

If you say the tabloids only cover what the public want - which is the normal argument many of you put across - my my I have to say Mr W arren must be a very popular chap on this forum and in the general public - I say this as it seems he can get whatever space it requires for his weekly article. :TU:

Not 100% sure what you mean, ironically I did genuinely got lost with all that "intelligent chap" stuff.

Off course I would love to see Boxing on the back pages, and even "gossip" involving boxers (and not WAGS) on the front pages.

However, I think the move should be to question the amount of coverage of football..... thats what dominates the coverage. Far more than the viewing figures of football coverage gets.

Okay, you pluck sports out of thin air - fair enough, but in all seriousness I would appreciate what sports you feel gets a consistent more coverage than boxing and another question, when was a time when you feel boxing got more coverage than it does now. Would the equivalent of Small vs Webb got any coverage "back in the day". Boxing has always been "name" orientated.... Gary Mason got most attention when he fought Tyrrel Biggs (Tyson link), Terry Armstrong (Tyson link), and Lennox Lewis - when he won the British title he didn't get much coverage.

Thats not to say I don't want coverage... of course I do..... Its a different argument as to whether boxing has ever had enough. However, your rants on this topic give the impression that you feel Boxing has "moved down" a pecking order or had a great reduction in coverage.... when I actually don't feel it has. I don't think any sport has overtaken it, or boxing has had a reduction. On the contary, I think it has had the an increased coverage (compare Hatton to Honeyghun) and its still "name" orientated and lets give Haye a chance to see if he can become the name. When the "stars" come, it will get there I am convinced..... like the next Naz, Tyson or Ricky - geniune Back page stars. Untill we find one, boxing will always lose out to football.

Has it EVER had enough, different argument and one I feel we will be singing from the same hymn sheet.

If Pat Sheehan doesn't simply KNOW John Ruiz was once knocked out in less than twenty seconds he should hang his head in shame. He shouldn't need to research or check that. Its just a basic fact every boxing follower would know isn't it?

Still only 5 million people read it.

Perhaps everyone could print a copy of Tua standing over Ruiz and confetti his seat on the night.

I'll leave before I read Spud thinks boxing should get more coverage.....doh. Too late.

I'm sure we've all told you this before, boxing's basically a minority sport and it gets TV coverage appropriate to that status. and where the hell you get the idea that its one of the most popular among the MIDDLE classes, is beyond me, other than the usual case of you desperately trying to make the 'facts' fit your own case. its as though you make out like boxing is or should or could be a rival to football.

look just because you're passionate about it, doesn't make you right, you do realise that, don't you?

in fact the cynical might suggest that it's your very self-proclaimed passion that makes you blinkered enough to say things worthy of someone as mad as a bag full of ferrets. and disqualifies you from partaking in any adult form of conversation, to boot.

its quite funny though, every time your arguments skate over thin ice you bang on about how passionate you are about boxing. you're not unlike those total bores who continually tell people 'you see, the thing about me is...', then tell you for the umpteenth time how plain-speaking/quicktempered/quirky/whatever they are.

How funny it is that National Papers slag the web sites when all Mr Sheehan had to do was log on to boxrec and check Ruiz's record.

I too used to have dealings with Mr Sheehan and I can confirm he has always came to shows with his wife. Maybe he should leave her at home and the promoter should give her pass to boxrec News.

Sky TV had to cancel a show once coz a boxer was late into the country and it was Mr Sheehan who was pestering the Boxing Board informing them of the rules. He should be sacked he is a fool.

These kind of things are what made me leave boxing. Sort it out the Sun and sack Sheehan.
