Boxing: Four Cardiff fighters win Welsh ABA titles Mar 5 2005

FOUR Cardiff fighters won titles at the Welsh Amateur Boxing Association National Senior Championships at the Newport Centre last night, writes Malcolm Collins.
Bantamweight Lee Fortt recorded a comfortable 41-19 win over 2003 champion Nathan Probert (Pembroke ABC), with the 18-year-old Fortt avenging last year's defeat against the same opponent.
Defending lightweight champion Peter Ashton, who trains at Cwmavon Hornets in Port Talbot, outclassed Jonathan Lloyd (Gelligaer) by a 20-point margin.
Southpaw Robert Ellery (Splott Adventure) used some accurate two-handed attacks to subdue Wayne Brooks (Ely Star ABC) to take the light-heavyweight crown by four points.
And another Splott Adventure man, Alan Kasongo, recorded a second round stoppage over 1998 superheavyweight champion Mark Flynn.

Well I don't know if you saw it. Biased view here, but I was dissapointed. Peter Ashton impressed as did that little flyweight, but very little else. Bowers vs Saunders looked like the fight of the night, good contest and both have potential but need to work on their defence.
Darren Edwards is a excellent amateur, but doesn't have the power to make it in the Pro's. Ashton looked the best bet for me.
Aaron Thomas just fell short (by 1 point) to winning his second succesive title. I was personally glad, because the other fella was from West Wales and I have heard that Thomas can be a naughty lad (not sure if this is true though).
Glad that Wayne O Sullivan got of the floor to win the fight, it is good for me personally because I've had a few good sparring sessions with Wayne a couple of years back. He is from a fighting family and has won countless Kickboxing belts. He is improving, but the fact he won a WABA has made me very happy for him and for my ambitions.
The two heavyweight contests were nothing short of disgraceful. Had Kevin Evans turned pro, that O'Connell who hadn't fought for 7 years and didn't begin training untill January 2005 (and it showed by his condition) would have been WABA champion. As for the Big Daddy at Super Heavy, I was too busy pissing myself to notice that the other guy wasn't much kop either.

I've seen Kevin Evans look a lot sharper than that also, but it must be hard for him to get motivated for practical walk over like he had. I think if Kevin was the "name" fighter, the WABA would classify his fights as walk over - I mean, should a man who hadn't fought in 7 years and hadn't began training until January should be allowed to fight a former World Amateur Bronze medalist.
Kevin will be in his early thirties by the next Olympics, never going to have a good chance in these torunments with the preperation he can have in Wales.... He needs to turn pro, he did have ambitions for that at one stage.
Azi fights out of the same gym as i did, he can be a very naughty lad, where do i start on that one!!. On the other hand the lads very commited and disciplined, i can see him turning pro now although i think he had his heart set on a secnd aba tite which im surprised he didnt get, perhaps he underestimated his opponent. he won the first, then lost the next two, they reckon going ito the fight he thought he'd won before the first bell, cruised the first then kickedback, he beat the gy in the prelims last year.
He may suit the pros beter, he likes to bully opponents and is very strong for the weight, the main problem he'll come up against is "boxers that box" can beat him, if they get drawn into a brawl they'll loose...

going back to the bad lad thing, again he's in the news for the wrong reasons.
A TEENAGER yesterday told how he delivered a fatal punch to a heroin addict because he felt "threatened" by him..
Derek McGarry was hit in the face near North Wales Police headquarters in Colwyn Bay on September 6, and died seven days later.
Richard Michael Carribine, 18, of Old Colwyn, admits punching Mr McGarry but denies manslaughter.
Mr McGarry, 41, also of Old Colwyn, was attacked after allegedly raising his middle finger at Carribine.
Cross-examining Carribine at Caernarfon Court yesterday, Stephen Everett, defending, asked: "There is no doubt you punched - didn't you - Derek McGarry?"
Carribine replied: "Yes." Mr Everett asked him how he felt in retrospect.
Carribine answered: "Disappointed in myself," adding he felt "awful" for Mr McGarry's family.
On that day Carribine said he met his friend Nick Hornby and went for a drive in a car being driven by boxer Aaron Thomas, the son of former Wales football international Mickey Thomas.
Carribine said: "I was sitting in the back of the car when I saw McGarry stick his finger up. I told the other two. Nick got out of the car and I followed. Aaron Thomas was standing by the car."
Carribine said he hit Mr McGarry because he feared he was going to get something out of his pocket.
He said: "I felt threatened for me and Nicholas."
The teenager added: "He could have stuck something in me. I just punched him to stun him so that I could get away. "I thought it was just a little punch; he'd walk off and that would be it."
Mr Everett read statements on behalf of Carribine from people praising him as decent and quiet.
Earlier barmaid Jo Jones Williams told the court she was drinking at the Marine pub in Old Colwyn on September 6 when Hornby and Carribine walked in at about 5pm.
Miss Williams said: "He (Hornby) said to Rich 'That was one f*** of a punch'. I said 'What was a f*** of a punch? Rich answered 'I have just been boxing with Aaron Thomas in the gym'. "
Karl Scholz, prosecuting, said the punch fractured Mr McGarry's jaw in two places and was so hard Carribine "must have felt it".
Carribine answered: "No."
