most FEARED fighters

Post by jimglen »

Jock McAvoy was UNCROWNED World middleweight Champion mid-late 1930s!

SO FEARED the American Boxing powers refused him title shots in the division but ALLOWED him the 'hypocracy' of fighting for the World light-heavyweight title against John Henry Lewis (now classed as an All-time Great), which McAvoy obliged and took John Henry Lewis the distance over 15 rounds...

Question, would ANY of the 'other' world leading middleweights (Steele, Hostak. Apostili, Yarosz, Krieger) have done the same against J H Lewis? I doubt it... Thats how feared Jock McAvoy was and yet even Mac had a feared middleweight adversary here on the home front (UK)!

..joe louis terrified opponents who were tough guys and had records against some of the other tough guys....king levinsky is an example...check his record...not an outstanding fighter but he was never known to be easily intimidated. yet, when he "fought" joe louis...it was an outdoor fight...lovely clear skies..yet ther main event was put on early because of "the threat of an oncoming storm". they were afraid levinsky wouldn't even come out for the fight if he had any more time to think about it. when he did get in he just crawled along the ropes and pleaded not to be hit..and he was aguy who went thorty rounds with max baer.

there are lot of good inmtimidaters listed here..the difference with louis was an one poster said....he was just cool...deapan...no staredown...no prefight crap....just having seen him fight took ther starch of many out of those who went against him

think John L. Sullivan must be included, especially so if you were mad enough to take him on after he had been for a drink.

On a serious note though, I still can't believe the late Jimmy Young lost to rtis guy.

Did anyone here actually see that fight?

But the question is who feared him more, his opponents or certain sections of white society?

Vitali Klitschko is quite intimidating with his Frankenstein likeness, no one will beat Tyson for the most feared fighter in history though
