Super Six or Super Fix ?

Post by whiskey »

Dirrell has so many attributes above and beyond the other competitors, but Saturday night showed him at his best and his worst.

Forgetting him for a moment though as we got 10 threads on him, it's becoming extremely apparent that Showtime are really gearing up for pushing an american through to the final. It certainly not a level playing field at all.

The fact that Andre Ward butted Kessler 8 times in the face, smashed both his eyes in - and not a single thing said to him is a joke. The referee was disgusting and how people can say "oh he was winning anyway" is ridiculous. To expect any man to take skull on eye's every single round, then have adrenaline poured into your cornea's every 3 minutes is going to put anyone off.

Then we have Dirrell who 'hurt his back' and suddenly the fight is shifted 3,400 miles east to within 60 miles of his hometown and they drop a shite referee in like Laurence Cole into the foray for good measure. Cole allowed lots of things to happen, yet failed to spot obvious knockdowns and was praying that cut opened up.

Make no mistake, with the semi's and the grand final being held in America they are giving their boys as many breaks as they possibly can in this show.

If we look at the europeans, they have just got on with it. Despite holding two of the belts between them, they accepted all the elements of the competition. No heirs or graces about it.

We have Kessler who bravely fought on despite horrendous cuts and has not delayed his second fight as a result, he got royally shafted by the referee but has simply got on with it.

Then we have Abraham who flew back home to Germany after a long stay in Miami without any fuss. When the fight was moved, again absolutely no fuss that it was next to Dirrell's house.

But look at the likes of Ward and Dirrell. They have both declared injuries which have been highly dubious - with Dibella claiming he took calls as not to book flights for Ward v Green as he believed it was never going to happen. Then we have Dirrell who has the superpower of being able to predict when a back injury would disappear.

We got Andre Ward, originally a prospect, fighting every single of his fights in Oakland. Surely this perk would be reserved for a belt holder, if anyone at all ?

All the bitching, moaning, date cancellations etc and moving show dates has all been by the Americans. The Europeans have not moaned, they have simply got the hell on with it. Whether that's a date change, venue change, being screwed by referee's or whatever.

Even reading between the lines one step further, it would appear now Taylor is out, Dibella has been left out of the Showtime mason's club. Green is being viewed as a bit player if you ask me by the station.

Super Six?

More like Super Fix.

Some good points there. I've never understood why ward has got his three fights at his home in Oakland while everyone has had to travel.

Discussing referee Laurence Cole for a moment...

Remember the crooked bastard being suspended ? he cover his mic up as he walked Marquez back to his corner and said to him "your ahead on the cards?" in other words "i can stop the fight and make you the winner" which was a fecking disgrace. Got him banned for a while.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BhfGx7vk12Q here is the clip.

Also remember him during Barrera vs Pacquiao ? he wrongly ruled over lots of slips and falls.... his handling of Diaz vs Malignaggi was apalling too. He had to ask a judge whether a punch or a head caused the cut, despite being stood 3 feet in front of the action. Lederman went crackers.

"lawrence cole son of Dick Cole, the boxing director for the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. The Coles also sell insurance to promoters doing business in the Lone Star state, a business practice long considered by many as a conflict of interest.

The Coles have been a source of controversy for some time now, because of the dealings associated with their sale of insurance to promoters in fights they are either refereeing (Cole Jr.) and/or overseeing, (Cole Sr.). Cole Jr. has stated in the past, that he doesn't see a conflict on interest in this arrangement."

Apparently it's in his contract with Showtime. They insisted on it.

Well that shows how much confidence they have in him. The thing is, ward has the talent to win this tourney

I think they floated it past Bute, but they had bigger cheques to cash with HBO in the pipeline and didn't want scripted fights.

They are in a strong position whereby they get 18,000 in the Bell centre for William Joppy - and the tickets aint cheap either.

I hope Dirrell and Ward get KTFO very soon, personally. Ward for being too shit scared to travel like everyone else and Dirrell for being a runner and an actor. I have nothing against Alan Green thus far so it's not an anti-American thing in the least, I just think it should be a level playing field and these guys are clearly making sure that it's not.

Well so far the dodgiest thing was the Froch vs Dirrell decision. Everything else has been a fair call.

Some very good points Gomez. Its a shame we cant see Froch anymore on Sky or ITV maybe after all this has finished he will make his way back to regular TV.

i am now in the mode of thinking that dirrell is going to win the super6 ... he is well placed now, im presuming he gets 3 points for an inside the distance win.

i saw the fight about a week after all the moaning (on replay) and was shocked that this fight is controversial. and shocked at the ppl dumping on froch in lieu of dirrell's committment to negative tactics. dirrell was too negative, and froch wasn't being given credit for the jabs and grazing shots he landed. it was ugly but froch deserved to win it. maybe a debatable fight, but certainly not a robbery.

every dirrell fight will be "controversial." he did better vs abraham because of abraham's shortness and one pace. there'll e something wrong with him next time and the time after that, i reckon.

of course not. you get 3 points for forcing a stoppage. you don't get 3 points for winning on DQ. dirrell is BADLY placed because he has a loss and his win is only 2 points, surely. abraham is better placed as he nearly hammered jermain taylor through the canvas.

dirrell won't win the tourney, no way, but no doubt the coulda shoulda it's not fair brigade will come out and not fail to note that he had the "athletic talent" to win it.

dirrell's ruining the tourney IMO and will continue to do so. but he lacks the maturity and toughness and regardless of how good he can look for 8 rds vs a top fighter, it doesn't mean he's going to start putting it all together all of a sudden.

now all of a sudden ward is the favorite, but there's no guarantee he'll look great against different styles.

the super 6 hasn't exploded like i hoped - maybe not until froch v abraham - but it is forcing fighters into mostly uncomfortable fights, which is refreshing to see given how well managed most fighters are. we are thankfully seeing all the weaknesses that crafty promoters can normally cover up.

True mate, the styles aren't gelling particularly well so far. Abraham-Taylor was probably the best fight I've seen, and that was mostly one sided. Ward butted and fouled his way to victory against Kessler and Dirrell ran for 3/4's of the fight against Froch and then faked a seizure against Abraham. So yeah, I agree that Ward and Dirrell have been the negative factors in the tournament so far.

And the bad thing is, show time need the Americans to do well otherwise no one will have much interest on the other side of the pond.

I agree that should have been a knockdown. However one could argue that one wasn't counted for Dirrell when the ropes held up Abraham.

I don't understand why Abraham's management agreed to Laurence Cole being the referee. Surely they know his history?
