ITL's Cammarelle "I have no interest in professional boxing"

http://www.rgj.com/article/20100331/SPO ... -hits-Reno Italy must really treat their boxers well. Cammarelle and Russo are both Italian State Police. Russo who wants to turn pro after London games.

Cammarelle and Russo are paid well as Russo turned down a Don King offer to turn pro. They get endorsement and TV appearance fees plus their police salaries and boxing stipends. Must all add up to a nice amount.

Great Britain also pays its boxers about 5 times as much as our boxers. Other countries' boxers get nice promotional contracts plus big bonuses and pay from their governments.

Can't really blame our guys for going professional so fast...a lot of guys have kids who they need to feed and USA Boxing isn't really giving them much to live off of. Plus if you have a job with the Italian Government and box for them, they will accommodate you. Most jobs aren't going to let you miss so much time to travel.
"Different temperature, day by day. Very strange," Cammarelle said.

He should come to Michigan if he wants to see really strange weather.

Strange that Cammarelle said he thought it was hard to make a living in the pro game.

As an Olympic Super Heavyweight Champ and such a decorated amateur, he would become a relatively rich young man just signing to a promoter to turn pro!

I think what he's saying is that he is already a rich 'young' man. lol. I read somewhere he comes from old money and now he mostly trains. I doubt that he really performs any law enforcement duties. It's not like he's Carabinieri or something. State Police in Italy handle bridge security and the Autostrada (high-speed highway) plus he's an officer. He's basically paid to train and sounds like he has it pretty nice.

True, it does sound like he has a great set up.

I also read his family are worth a few quid.

Cammarelle has a bad back and needs frequent treatment for it. He probably worries that the stress and strain of the pro game with longer rounds would only make it worse. If you watch him walk around you can tell that he has back problems.

Right. Cammarelle can make far more as a pro boxer.

The State Police job will give him "job security" for a long time plus possibly a pension. They allow him to train and travel to compete as an amateur for Italy, but they might not do the same if he was a pro. He has a steady, stable income now, but as a pro an injury can mean no paycheck for quite awhile. I think he likes being the top dog and he wouldn't be if he turned pro. Plus who knows, maybe he has stamina issues and knows that he would have problems going 10 or 12 rounds.
