THIRTY-FOUR YEARS AGO TODAY
Thirty-four years ago today was the the first Ali-Frazier fight at MSG. I remember it well and that fight still remains the biggest sporting event I have seen in my lifetime as far as public interest is concerned. I would say only the Johnson- Jeffries fight rates with Ali-Frazier I for social significance and anticipation. I still have all the newspaper clippings I cut out and saved from the fight. It is hard to believe it has been 34 years. Where were you and what do you most remember about that magical night?

Unfotunately, I was only 2 and a half years old at the time. But my daddy told me that it was The Fight of the Century indeed.
I watched the fight again before last night, and I can IMAGINE THE ANTICIPATION, the drama, the hoopla, and everything surrounding the fight watched by hundred of millions fans all over the world.
Duran-Leonard I, Leonard-Hearns I and Leonard-Hagler were great, but they did not come close to Ali-Frazier I in terms of anticipation and expectation...What a fight!!!

A fight that might have the same aura of expectation and anticipation like Ali-Frazier I, would have been Tyson-Holyfield in 1991 instead of their 1996 slugfest, which was good, but 5 years too late.
I remember that at the time, EVERYBODY WANTED TO SEE THIS FIGHT, but the rape convictions and Tyson supposedly "rib injury" erased it.
