Jerry Quarry-vrs-Mac Foster(MSG-June.17.1970)
Re: Jerry Quarry-vrs-Mac Foster(MSG-June.17.1970)
Man, what a great video.
Jerry looked great with that killer finish. The great Don Dunphy calling the action, my favorite ring announcer Johnny Addie announcing the finish, the clang of that bell, cut man Chickie Ferrara in the ring after the finish, MSG, the mecca of boxing.
That era was great.

Part two/rounds 3-4-5.

I think the fight may have been already over(at least psychologically for Foster)
when Foster landed that big right hand flush on Quarry's jaw(2:28 of part two)
and Quarry was still standing and fighting back even harder after that punch.

Foster had been protected up until the Quarry fight. Only 4 of his previous 24 opponents had won their previous fight before fighting Foster and none of the 4 were well known.
His two best opponents had been Thad Spencer who had lost 3 in a row before fighting Foster and Cleveland Williams who had lost 2 of his last 3. Foster probably should have had a step up fight before facing a contender.

It would be interesting to see the full video of the televised MsG boxing show.
I think just before the fight, they honoured Jack Dempsey's 75th birthday, with him there and showing films of his fights with Willard,Firpo and Tunney. With GeneTunney,Jack Sharky,James J. Braddock there in person along with Mickey Walker,Willie Pep,Jake LaMotta,Joey Giaredello,Carlos Ortiz,Emile Griffin,Dick Tiger and Floyd Patterson all in attendance.
That was back when they still had boxing ceremonies in the ring before big fights.
When was the last time you saw that on television?

Mac Foster moves around the ring like he had some lead in his shoes.

Speaking of Mac Foster as a sparring partner.
In Earnie Shavers autobiography he mentions that in early 1971,when he was training at the Main Street Gym in L.A,
Mac Foster was also training there.
They sparred for 3 rounds.
First round Foster tried to knock out Shavers.
Second round Shavers staggered Foster and his trainer came in ring to hold him up.
Third round Shavers tore off Foster's headgear with a right hand and Foster's trainer came in and halted the sparring session.
Next day Foster left for Fresno California.
(a newspaper article from 1973 ,Shavers manager claimed Shavers knocked down Foster in sparring but Shavers didnt say that in his autobiography).

a FIGHT THAT NEVER HAPPENED
Mac Foster was scheduled to fight Ron Lyle in Denver CO, August.12.1972.
(Foster was ranked 9th and Lyle 8th)
But Foster withdrew from the fight a few days earlier saying his elbow had been injured in training.
(earlier x-rays revealed bone chips in elbow)but the Colorado athletic comision suspended him.

I think Mac Foster physically resembled Buster Mathis a lot.
He just couldnt move like Mathis.
