Upon reflection I think Sangchilli edges Uzcudun by this much. Surprised that Spain has produced so few great fighters.

Spain's Greatest Fighter?
Was it El Cid?
Was it El Cid?
Re: Spain's Greatest Fighter
Baltazar Sangchili is my number 1.
Hilario Martinez deserves a shout. Lost alot, but beat Johnny Dundee, Jack Britton, Sid Terris, Manuel Quintero, Joe Glick, Stanislaus Loayza and dropped a hard fought split decision to Lew Tendler.

Ignacio Ara had like 180 fights and was never stopped and I don't think he was even knocked down. He had the greatest chin in boxing bar none.

Any more votes?
Re: Spain's Greatest Fighter
I'm shocked that the country that produced the Conquistadors has not produced more fighting talent. Was a time when the whole world trembled at their mention.

Same could be said for Italy, though there's is a richer history. Portugal is another like Spain.BoxBuzz wrote:I'm shocked that the country that produced the Conquistadors has not produced more fighting talent. Was a time when the whole world trembled at their mention.

Re: Spain's Greatest Fighter
Evangilista aint spanish
Re: Spain's Greatest Fighter
He was born in Uruguay but his whole career was out of Spain. Where he has lived since the early 70s. So he's Spanish alright.

it may work like that in the states, but not europe.
Re: Spain's Greatest Fighter
Wasnt Paulino Uzcadun of Basque extraction?
Re: Spain's Greatest Fighter
Yet Evangelista was the European heavyweight champion for a few years.hurlock wrote:Broncano wrote:He was born in Uruguay but his whole career was out of Spain. Where he has lived since the early 70s. So he's Spanish alright.

So by the same logic let's say Joe Bugner was never British...

lennox lewis was born here but i class him as canadian, the same i would the tennis player gregg rusedski.
Re: Spain's Greatest Fighter
So then, given that place of birth isn't a deciding factor, I must ask what is the criteria? :??hurlock wrote:

Re: Spain's Greatest Fighter
were your raised or your parents ethnicity, from my view.
Re: Spain's Greatest Fighter
People can have dual nationalities, you know. It's not an either/or choice.
Re: Spain's Greatest Fighter
Exactly, Senor hitman.
I can see how an argument can be made for the "place where you were raised"
But ethnicity? What does that have to do with your nationality?

Re: Spain's Greatest Fighter
While far from being a great fighter, Paulino Uzcudun was one tough heavyweight who was able to compete with some success in the United States.

Interestingly enough (or should I say alarmingly?), Castillejo is ahead.
Re: Spain's Greatest Fighter
By the way, Spani's greatest fighter is:
Jose Manuel Urtain.
