I Recognize all of them except for Yermakhan Ibraimov and I believe they are all the Olympic gold medalists from 2000 and 2004.

Yeah, that's correct-

So, part 2- how many names stand out as being successful professionals?

Gamboa, Ward, and Asloum all won WBA titles and Povetkin and Solis are high ranked contenders, so I guess you would regard these fighters as the more successful ones of the bunch. Gamboa and Ward are the only two who really look to have superstar potential. Not really an overwhelming talent pool. Just look at the fighters Audley beat to win his vaunted gold.

Well in some cases that is unfair... Kindelan was an older man when he fought in his last Olympics, was never going to defect at that age.

Adam,

How did you rack up 30,000 posts in 18 months ?

Considering there are only just under 14,000 hours in that time, you must have posted 2.2 an hour since you signed up.

I thought this was an interesting look at the fortunes of the much-touted "Olympic Golden Boys."

These are the men who won medals 10 and 6 years ago- given logical time scales, they should be at the height (or close to) of their professional careers.

And these are men who WON the contest- most of our current "Olympic prospects didn't."

How many really "set the world on fire?"

For sure, there are exceptions- some presumably didn't/wouldn't/couldn't become professionals.

But I dunno- does this reflect well on the prospects of an Olympian?

More to the point, how can someone with 30,000 posts not recognise the name Odlanier Solis???

Funnily enough at the time of his Olympic success Abdullaev was far from a Cotto victim: he beat the teenager like a ginger stepson on his way to the gold.

It was man against boy. By the time they net in the pros, Cotto was all grown up.

Sometimes, one despairs.

Surely every decent fight fan watches the gold medal bout at each weight?

yes, Abullaev Cotto in the pros was touted as revenge or repeat, although 99% of sensible people could see it was going to be revenge. Cotto gave it him just as good in the pros as abdullev did him in the ams.

Good post thoguh Whicker, very interesting.
