Marlon Starling-Ricky Hatton Who Wins
Marlon Starling-Ricky Hatton Who Wins
Assume Starling comes in at 147 in the days they weighed in the same day so didnt have time to get bigger on fight night and Hatton weighs in in the modern day era at 140 lbs the day before the fight so is more a 147lber than a 140lber.
Re: Marlon Starling-Ricky Hatton Who Wins
Starling could be a slow starter, but this is still a mismatch. Marlon is just too rugged for Hatton at this weight. This one is over in about 6.
Re: Marlon Starling-Ricky Hatton Who Wins
Starling would have a walk in the park.
Re: Marlon Starling-Ricky Hatton Who Wins
Seamus, with the weigh in days changed these guys are probably closer in weight than it first looks.
Starling was a gifted fighter but I always thought him to be vulnerable to a high volume puncher who may not be as good but who simply outworked him. Hatton could do this. BUT Hatton has shown how susceptible he is to a straight shooting counter puncher. Starling could do this.
In all honesty this is an intriguing fight. Starling at his best wins BUT how often was he at his best?
Hatton would want him on the ropes and Starling would oblige. I imagine Hatton would be winning the rounds but losing the fight. If Starling lies there for too long he gets outworked but if he punches back intelligently and with enough venom, and most importantly, maintains this output I imagine he wins by late stoppage.
Over 10 though I can imagine Hatton winning.

Re: Marlon Starling-Ricky Hatton Who Wins
Honeyghan stupidly assumed the role of puncher/slugger putting relentless pressure on starling early on in their match up and even tho it was more or less even after 3 rounds he paid a terrible price cos Starling was a superb counterpuncher with a tight defence.Ezzard wrote:Seamus, with the weigh in days changed these guys are probably closer in weight than it first looks.

That said when starling was having an off night even a fujio ozaki could push him close.
I find this match up intriguing too.
To this day I think the honeyghan who beat curry, rosi, blocker, bumphus and hatcher would have beaten any starling.
I cant think of a winner. But tend to lean towards ricky

Re: Marlon Starling-Ricky Hatton Who Wins
This would not be competitive. Hatton is just too easy to hit for a good counter puncher like Starling, and Marlon had enough power to stop him. Probably doesn't go more than 4 or 5 rounds.
Re: Marlon Starling-Ricky Hatton Who Wins
The Magic Man easy. Ricky's face would resemble Looyd Honeyghan's after he faced Starling.
Marlon was never stopped in his career, Hatton by decision would be a very unlikely event.

I'd pick Hatton.

Starling administers a dreadful beating and stops Hatton in nine, if not sooner,. Starling in a different class to Hatton in every respect.
Not a fair comparison for Ricky.

Hmmmm…
The best of Starling went the distance with inferior and less resistant opponents than Hatton. Maybe Boxers of the Past posters are being too critical because of the Pac fight.
I’m not sure this is the blow out many people are predicting.

Thats the thing isnt it about Hatton. right now on account of the mayweather and pacman fight his career is practically considered worthless by some.Ezzard wrote:Hmmmm…

My own view is Hatton is a much finer boxer than that and the guy who fought Mayweather and Pacman is more or less shot from years of blowing up to 200 lbs and than coming down. He has lost hunger and motivation too.

Re: Marlon Starling-Ricky Hatton Who Wins
It's hard to argue with the theory that the weight fluctuations have erdoded Hatton's skills. However, my opinion of him getting stopped in this one was based more on his apparent weakness to counterpunching, but yes he probably isn't given quite the credit he deserves for what has been a very good career.mugabi wrote:Thats the thing isnt it about Hatton. right now on account of the mayweather and pacman fight his career is practically considered worthless by some.Ezzard wrote:Hmmmm…

Re: Marlon Starling-Ricky Hatton Who Wins
I'm still not getting the argument for Hatton here. I'm not calling Hatton a bum because he was pretty good at 140, but plain and simple he's not much of a Welterweight. He's 1-2 or maybe even 0-3 at 147 if you ask a few people, while Starling has been in with Donald Curry twice, Breland twice, Honeyghan and Simon Brown.
Hatton can't hurt Starling at 147, and with his pressuring style he's going to be right in front of Marlon for as long as this one lasts. I just can't see his chin holding up too long in this one.

Those guys are welters with same day weigh in though.Seamus wrote:I'm still not getting the argument for Hatton here. Hatton may actually be the bigger man in this matchup
I still think he gets tore up by Starling.
Re: Marlon Starling-Ricky Hatton Who Wins
I agree apart from I think he starts by outhustling Starling but eventually fades due to taking too many accurate counters and by throwing too many shots that bounce of arms and elbows.Grimm wrote:Those guys are welters with same day weigh in though.Seamus wrote:I'm still not getting the argument for Hatton here. Starling could take one hell of a whack to the body. His peek a boo stance and long arms protected the vital parts of the body and face. He took some hefty whacks from honeyghan in the first few rounds but none in the ribs.
Hatton too would have real problems hurting starling to the body

Looking at your forum name I just thought, a more interesting matchup would be The Beast vs The Magic Man at 154.mugabi wrote:Starling could take one hell of a whack to the body. Re: Marlon Starling-Ricky Hatton Who Wins
The beast was just too inconsistent and fell away after the Hagler 86 brutalisation Moochie would have beaten him!

The Beast showed great power when he stopped Parker and Green back to back, but I agree with you. I don't think he would have been able to land a clean shot on Starling, and he would have been outboxed and frustrated trying to land something big.mugabi wrote:The beast was just too inconsistent and fell away after the Hagler 86 brutalisation Moochie would have beaten him!

Agreed. How about The Hawk, then?

Interesting thought. While I don't think Priyor would have landed too many clean shots on Starling, his work rate probably would have kept Magic Man busy enough that I could see Pryor winning a decision. Pryor might get dropped a couple times simply becuase he could be careless, but I could certainly see him taking enough rounds to pull it out.Broncano wrote:Agreed. How about The Hawk, then?

That's another interesting matchup but I was thinking about the other Hawk, the one fron The Virgin Islands...

Re: Marlon Starling-Ricky Hatton Who Wins
Starling had a funny career and maybe that is why some people don't realize how good he was. He was much, much better than Ricky Hatton. If you just look at his record and don't know the circumstances, he doesn't look quite as good as he was.
He lost a close fight to Curry who at the time was fighting at an extremely high level.
He totally got robbed in a fight with Breland and only got a draw.
In certain eras, he would have been the welterweight champion for several years.

Aaron Pryor is a totally different proposition. The Great John L wrote:Interesting thought. With that herky jerky style almost like naseem hamed, I just think he would have pounded starling for 12-15 rounds and won. He was smaller and shorter, but I think Starling was the kind of guy who could really be outworked. Breland only got a draw in the rematch as he stuck at whaling away at starling while marlon had his guard up and wasnt doing anything
