RIP Lew Lazar

Post by metchampion »

I heard the sad news this afternoon, that my old friend Lew Lazar has passed away. I have just spoken to Lews' Brother Jo, who gave his blessing for me to post this thread.

I first met 'Lew Lew', as he was affectionately known, when Jason Rowland and I started the ritual of a weekly Turkish Bath. Among those at the baths with Lew Lew, was his Brothers Jo and Mark (of QPR fame), Mickey Duff, Jimmy Batten and Jimmy Flint.

This little lot provided a dream opportunity to link in with a time when boxing in this country is viewed through rose tinted glasses.

I shared many a conversation with Lew about his career, including his fights with Charlie Kray and Terry Downes. When he'd finished in the steam, he could often be found sat round the green baize playing kalooki.

A boxing man through and through, Lew attended the London ex boxers meeting on Sunday morning, where he met and mingled with others of his former profession. He returned home that afternoon, where he suffered a heart attack. Lew was rushed to hospital and early this morning, the final bell tolled on a thorough gentleman.

May you rest in peace Lew, in fond rememberance, from Jason Rowland and Richard Clark.
