In 20 years time who will be remembered more?
In 20 years time who will be remembered more?
I've followed most of these blokes careers, some all the way, some towards the end and some that others made me take note of what they were doing abroad.
On a world scale, fighting here and abroad, will any of our top fighters most of which are in there twillight years ever be considered great amongst the worlds boxing fraternity, and is there still time for some to make a last dash to secure world notieriety?
Is there an argument that they've done enough to not be forgotten about in 20 years? I realize some of these guys are just launching and have a career ahead of them.
Fighters that i could argue until the cows come home with people from around the world that these Australians were great fighters, but there seems to be decades between them. I wont name all just the ones that in Modern Boxing(post world war 2)
Jeff Fenech
Jeff Harding
Kostya Tzsyu
Lionel Rose
Jimmy Caruthers
Johnny Femachon
Will any of the above names join that short list

Deliberately without reading the other posts, I've voted Danny Green. He'll be better remembered than Mundine and has a better promotions (his own) team behind him than the rest. He will have, most likely, had the most active career and produced the better contests.

For me Green needs some big fights in the next year. But seriously could sneak in with a couple more names like Jnr.
I think Katsidis could go on to do well, and has some good names already to build upon.
Mundine will never be known or honoured outside of Australia.

I dont think Green will get another name the likes of RJJ, his only chance would be to move up to HW Haye and Ademak have already made that move and made their intentions clear, thats a long hard road for Green. But thx to the RJJ fight he will be the one remembered in Oz (if any) in 20yrs time.
I love Kats. If he can secure and win a JMM fight it may catapault his career and god knows from then.
Internationally.... Darch is the only fighter in that bunch that may be remembered in the long term. He's unified his titles, cleaned out a division and looking to move up, no-one can ask more than that at this stage. For the past coupla years Darchinyan has appealed to me as the most ambitious fighter out there at the moment, if he can back up those ambitions he'll go a long long way.

He's openly expressed desire to fight Montiel and a rematch with Nonito.
The general opinion was that Mijares was going to box the pants off Vic.
When he moved up in weight he immediatley fought for a belt, granted not the best guy in the division but didnt waste time with a coupla "warm up" opponents.
Dont see where he's done too much wrong, not trying to be a dick but could you elaborate on your comments?
Re: In 20 years time who will be remembered more?
I'm not calling him a dud at all. But neither Vic, Donair nor Montiel where the best in the flyweight devision. He successfully avoided Pongsaklek Wonjongkam, Koki Komeda and Luis Coception by making a big noise, creating a smoke screen, and moving up a division, thus avoiding, and diverting our attention from, more accomplished fighters that didn't suit his very limited style.Tinnie wrote:Who has he ducked?dberry wrote:He's avoided the major players and stalwarts of his divisions and moved up looking for opponents to suite his styledberry wrote:

An exciting world level boxer? I agree wholeheartedly. The best in his division before moving up (and avoiding the best) NO WAY, NO CHANCE, NO HOW!

Re: In 20 years time who will be remembered more?
^^Still, I'd have to agree with Tinnie that Vic is the most accomplished Australian fighter. If he wins titles in a few other divisions than he will have to be regarded as up there with the best of Aussies modern-era boxers. I can't see anyone else on that list coming close - hope I'm proved wrong.
Re: In 20 years time who will be remembered more?
remembered...I'd say Green. Not the best, but he will be remembered for bringing out RJJ.
Vic is the most accomplished of those on the list. Regardless of whether he cleans out divisions or not, he has done the most.

Re: In 20 years time who will be remembered more?
vic has avoided nobody.
he unified his division ffs.
his is one of the few top fighters in the world that is only interested in fighting the best, full stop.
he has achieved more than most of the fighters in the world today.
he bashed the crap out of fighters who were suppose to make him look like an amateur.

Re: In 20 years time who will be remembered more?
Within the boxing circles I believe it to be Danny Green and Vic to be remembered most.
Both have had decent (Green) to great (Vic) achievements in their careers - to this point - and Green is one-half of the reason a lot of the general public are noticing boxing, regardless of how great the noticing is, again and with victories of Dews, RJJ, Lucas he's got a couple of worthy victories.
I voted within the general public however and I should have been given two choices. I think we all know who I'm talking about. A lot of people will remember the rivalry more than each individual boxer's achievements, failings or records however. So I picked the one who I don't respect because it'll probably be him that is remembered more.

i voted for meehan cause i think he will beat chagaev and i just can't see haye staying on his feet against meehan.
added to that if he does beat haye, i'd imagine that meehan would be the type of fighter who would be prepared to put his title on the line against a klit.

Re: In 20 years time who will be remembered more?
Probably Vic Darchinian. Undisputed champion in two weight divisions is pretty hard to top.
Twenty years is not long. They will probably all be remembered by people who follow boxing. I can still remember George Barnes and Gary Cowburn fighting for the Australian welterweight title, hearing Frank Hyde on 2SM saying about Barnes "Stop the fight, he can't win this."
(Frank was a good judge, the fight was stopped just after he said it).

Re: In 20 years time who will be remembered more?
See i know who frank hyde is, but i dont know the other blokes.
My point for the thread is there are a bunch of fighters that were good but were never champ or never reached international status, with some of the fighters listed they have never won titles but have achieved at least respect from an international Audience, while some have won titles, but aren't known outside of Aus. Some have another 5 to 10 years to go, while some have maybe a fight to 2 years to go.

Re: In 20 years time who will be remembered more?
mundine because hes controversial
Re: In 20 years time who will be remembered more?
Frank Hyde was a Sydney sports commentator. He was an old Rugby League Centre who commentated on the football for 2SM on the weekends and on the fights from Sydney Stadium. Had a hit record once with his version of "Danny Boy."Hounddawg wrote:See i know who frank hyde is, but i dont know the other blokes.
