Hall of fame consideration

Post by johnswan1 »

How many of these fighters do you think should be inducted into the hall of fame (based on achievements to date for those that are still active)? I have left out the more obvious ones (including Hatton and Calzaghe for the UK).

Oscar Larios
Jose Luis Castillo
Diego Corrales
Joel Casamayor
Kostya Tszyu
Arturo Gatti
Miguel Cotto
Vernon Forrest
Ricardo Mayorga
Cory Spinks
Jermain Taylor
Markus Beyer
Mikkael Kessler
Arthur Abraham
Antonio Tarver
Glen Johnson
James Toney
David Haye
Chris Byrd
John Ruiz
Wladimir Klitschko
Vitali Klitschko

Based on current achievements.
Kostya Tszyu
James Toney

Maybe JLC and Haye, Klitschkos bros, Miguel Cotto, if they improve their records. Don't think any of the others deserve it

Cotto is a certainty.Haye has an awful lot to do.The Klits should go in,on achievement, but are very "marmite"

Why is Cotto a certainty? Malignaggi-Quintana-Judah. Then won a close MD vs Mosley and a SD vs Clottey. He was running away at the end of the Mosley fight and some people thought he should have lost it. And was stopped by both Margarito and Pacquiao. Hardly the stuff of a first ballot hall of famer. He fought three P4P rated fighters winning a MD and getting KO'd twice.

I think Cotto desrves to go in. Ok he lost against Margarito and Pac but consider the circumstances in both fights.

He has some good names on his CV and he was always entertaining.

In terms of boxing achievement Gatti should be nowhere near the HOF but he could get in on terms of the excitement he brought.
Haye has won 2 Cruiserweight fights against top names, and against a very average Valuev. No discrediting his achievements but his achievements are nowhere near someone likes Orlando Canizales who was inducted this year.

Haye definitely doesn't deserve to be inducted into the Hall of Fame at this point in time, but at the end of his career it could be another story. His supporters will of course point to his feat of unifying the cruiser titles and winning a heavyweight belt, but look at who he beat to do this. Wins over Mormeck, Enzo, and Valuev do warrant a spot in the Hall. As for the, "there are worse fighters already in" argument, if we universally apply this pretty much every decent champ could make a case for deserving a spot.

Out of the names listed, Toney and Tzsyu are the two obvious choices. Cotto, the Klitschko's, Castillo, Corralles, Gatti, and Casamayor all have decent chances as well, I'm almost certain Cotto will get in. Haye still has the opportunity but will need to score some more big wins for a shot.

Why would Cotto get in but not Forrest? Forrest beat a prime Mosley twice. Cotto struggled with an older Mosley and has been KO'd twice by Margarito and Pacman. Cottos accomplicements are on a par with Ricardo Mayorga for me. He beat Forrest twice, Vargas too, but got KO'd by Trinidad, De La Hoya and Mosley. In fact, with both in their prime I think Mayorga takes out Cotto at Welter and Light Middle. I rate Cotto as one of the least worthy on the list for the Hall of Fame and I don't think he'd have coped with the pressure and unorthodox punching of Mayorga, not to mention his power at Welter.

A point to consider is it's the Hall of FAME, not the Hall of Achievements, it's easy to discredit anyone guy's CV so a lot of it is personal opinion.

A guy who is famous for being a boxer and who draw's crowds even way after his hey day like Arturo Gatti should be a dead cert IMO. In fact I could make a good case for most of the fighters listed, save a few like Beyer.

I think Gatti is guaranteed his place for the excitement he brought to his fights, win or lose. The hall of fame is there to recognise not only achievements in the ring but to also acknowledge the stars of the sport, and Gatti was one of them.
