And he still looks better than the likes of Povetkin and Chagaev in the 220s . .

I'm so tired of hearing about how today's HWs are bigger and stronger. Besides the K brothers nowadays they are just fatter. The likes of Dempsey, Louis, Ali, Johnson etc. were BIG men, with big natural frames but they actually entered into the ring TRIM and lean, not bulked up and slowed down.

Interesting footage by the way. Layne here looks much less sloppy technically than he would in later fights. I'm not sure exactly why his style changed to one of a crude slugger, he had decent skills.

Joe Louis did two exhibition fights with Rex Layne.
Both in Salt Lake City Utah.
The first was December.21.1949
(Joe Louis had boxed another 4-round exhibition same day with another Utah Hvywt, Jay Lambert, the 1948 U.S Olympic boxer)
Reportly Layne(186 lbs) drew a trickle of blood from Louis's nose in the first round.

The second exhibition with Rex Layne,January.24.1950.
(Joe Louis knocked down Layne in first round with a left hook of their second 4-round exhibition, first time Layne ever been on the canvas)
So unless the knockdown was edited out, this footage looks like its from the December 1949 exhibition.

Brockton has a really nice selection of videos but yeah Louis at 230 does look better than Chagaev and Povetkin.

There are very few heavyweights that are in shape.

Louis carries the weight well because he has big legs and ass.
He was a solid lad with powerful legs and a thick trunk at
200-210lbs. At 230 was just the 'out of shape' weight he no
doubt at times carried. But you are right DF, he does look better
than a lot of lads at around that weight. In this film Louis looks
pretty solid in the arms and shoulders.

Louis is always cool to watch.

Joe Louis's weight was listed in a newspaper article as 223 lbs(but he looks heavier).
I would like to see his exhibition bout with Nino Valdes at St.Petersburg Florida.
February.7.1950.
Reportly Valdes came out fighting hard in the third round and hit Louis with a pretty good shot and Louis punched him and knocked him down,
Valdes got back up for a moment then went down to a knee again .

Joe Louis was almost 35 years old when.
he retired as undefeated Heavyweight champion of the World
March.1.1949.
He had about 23 exhibition fights in 1949.
Earning about 300,000 dollars in that year.
Joe Louis usually got about 50 percent of the gate, when tickets were priced from about 1 dollar to 3 dollars.

Thanx Brutu,

You are correct. This is the first exhibition between the two! Dec 21st 1949 is only 9 days away from 1950, so I said 1950. But if you want to get technical, yes this exhibition happened in 1949.

What I should have said was Joe Louis vs Rex Layne I
