Arron Pryor vs Roberto Duran (135-140 lbs)
Arron Pryor vs Roberto Duran (135-140 lbs)
Who would win between these 2? Even in his prime,Pryor could easily make 135.

The war to end of all wars - a 15 round draw would be a good bet.
There's not many that could stay with Aaron Pryor's pace over 15 rounds, but if anyone could, it would probably be a fired up Duran at 135.
Maybe Duran nicks a points win based on getting a knockdown or two - Aaron was often off balance, and I'm not sure he'd have managed to floor the Panamanian. Defintely ones that goes the distance though.

Pryor vs Duran
I agree with both of the above fellows, this would be a frantic pace, that featured 2 prime conditioned fighters, who both had good solid chins.I think the edge in power goes to Duran, the edge in speed,to Pryor. But Pryor was often off-balance,which could result in a knockdown. But I think these 2 would set the arena on-fire,with a demand rematch, from rabidly satisfied fans.,
and if a k.o. occurred,I would be suprised as these 2 proud warriors would give it their all,and are tough as nails.

This of course is one of those fights that really should have happened but sadly never did.
As mutch as I admire and enjoy watching Pryor fight, I would lean towards a Duran points victory in a thrilling battle. As others have rightly said The Hawk could be dropped if only because he was sometimes caught off balance when rushing in. Durans wonderfull ability to counterpunch would take full advantage of this.
At 10st Duran would still be the puncher he was at Lightweight where he was as much a 'force of nature' as he was a fighter. Also Pryors aggressive, swarming style would appeal to Durans 'macho' mentality. Also Pryor was not a big Light-Welerweight. Even though this could have been a brutal, draining fight I get the feeling stylewise Dutan may even enjoy this fight.
I can just imagine Duran at the start and end of each round staring and snarling at Pryor for daring to enter 'his' domain.

Bit of a bizzare statement, considering Pryor had no worries getting into the ring with a modern legend like Arguello - a fighter, who unlike Duran, could near enough kill you with one punch.Jaclem wrote:...oh dear....i said i'd never post on this again...but that was a different thread and long ago...so....

Pryor was a lunatic, there's no way he'd have had any problems getting in the ring with Duran.
This would have been a great fight but I have to go with Duran... he was the more complete boxer and would more than match Pryor for speed and aggressiveness..... this would be toe to toe for much of the time but I think Duran would use his boxing skills against Pryorr and outbox him at times too... Duran by late round stoppage.
Though I pick Duran I wouldn't say Pryor was overrated... the guy was a phenominal fighter who could have done much more had it not been for his chaotic life outside the ring.Ben Keilty wrote:Jaclem wrote:...oh dear....i said i'd never post on this again...but that was a different thread and long ago...so....

Wrong answer. Go and stand in the corner. Pryor stood a 6 foot tall Tommy Hearns on his head as an amateur.Jaclem wrote:..not so bizarre when you know that in his pre-title days he would not fight anyone taller, howard davis or anyone not coming off a loss.
there's an old skeptic saying."Vas you dere, charlie?"..and i vas dere.
I vas dere too.
..if you was dere, how come i didn't see you? i don't recall you in in the conversatons with his promoter when these fights were discussed.
I am talking about the pro aaron pryor....not the amateur. as for tommy hearns.....as an amateur he scored only a handful of knockouts....lots of decisions.....it wasn't until he turned pro that he became the deadly puncher.
..if you are suggesting that pryor would have beat...let alone fight...tommy hearns when they were pros....pally...i don't think you were even there in front of the tv in those days.
have a nice week.

I find that very hard to belive Jaclem! in fact I do not belive it!!! for one thing Pryorr showed throughout his career that he was afraid of no one!.... he also was a natural Lightweight who went up to lightwelter cause all the Lightweights were ducking him! strange behaviour for someone wanting to fight midjets. Also Pryor was only 5 feet 6 tall... I find it inconcievable that all his pretitle opponents were 5 feet 6 or under.... and I know for a fact that Cervantes was about 5 feet 10.
I also know for a fact that Alfonzo Fraser and LEonardo Asprilla who Pryor fought before winning the title were both considerably taller than Aarron. Asprilla was at least 5 feet 9.
Don't doubt the man with the tape measure!... 8) .
Seriously though if Pryor was really trying to fight smaller guys he couldn't have done a worse job!.

.....i guess you're right, bollox....that fellow does concentrate on heights, doesn't he? Seems to know more than i did about a string of opponents i stood right next to in the dressing room.
i'm going to leave this one now.....too many personal relationships so i don't wish to continue
but...the myth that pryor had to go to junior welter because the lightweights were avoiding him is a clever one the pryor folks have turned into an accepted fact. it pops up in his autobio, i think....re-read it not too long ago. i have two copies...one in pristine condition...the other marked with my notes and corrections on the margins...including the misspelled names .
once i was misquoted by a sports writer who printed i said Pryor couldn't take a punch...based on watching him from the beginning. this of course was not true of pryor...took one hell of a punch. what i said was.."pryor can't keep on taking all those punches"...and i never got a retraction.
just bringing this up as one of the earliest times any time i write or talk about pryor (whom i admire because of his comeback from the depths tohe person he is now) started a controversy.

Duran vs. Pryor
I would say that Roberto Duran would win handily over
Aaron Pryor. This is from a fan of both fighters.
Pryor would not be able to hurt Duran, but Duran
had enough power as a lightweight to stop Pryor.
Moreover, I feel if Alexis Arguello could extend
Pryor, Duran would have much more success
if he face the latter.
