Surely its time for the 'billion dollar man' to call it a day, he falls over and stays over far too easily now. he has gone from fake tan 230 lb body beautiful to 195 lb physique of a man outside the pub or a chippy !! The Blackpool tower has turned into the Blackpool shower/dour.

Matthew has had a reasonable career, some good wins and certainly gained himself a reputable reputation on the circuit. there comes a time when, as well as trying to kid the boxing public, you start to kid yourself.

Come on Matthew, turn it in mate, enough is enough.

Rhino, you're right, it aint the first time you've started threads on his recent form (or lack of).

Your bang on the money, and I've agreed with you in the past. I was encouraged by his most recent loss before yesterdays' setback, cause he at least went the distance. Just being a bit nosey and wandering if you know him well?

I'm sure he can still make the odd buck boxing up north against even worst opponents..... but I would like to see him retire now.

Before last nights fight, his last bout was for the "interim WBC USNBC heavyweight title!!"

It can't be good with him losing so many now early on like that.

I saw him up in Peterlee a couple of years ago, he retired on his stoll, and looked hurt to the body afterwards.

I'd doubt he will fight again now.

Perhaps I'm being a bit too harsh here, but since the Enzo Mac fight he has been an embarassment to British boxing. The board shouldn't allow people in the ring who have no intention of doing anything other than going down for the full count when they are first hit by a body shot.

He used to be alright, but it's not good for his health going in there with no interest in what he is doing. At least most journeymen in this country turn up, try, and provide tests for up and coming prospects.

I hope he calls it a day, as I doubt the board will stop him.

I remember Tyson Fury blew him out inside 48 seconds last year. But I do feel that he should give up as well I do agree with you. Or maybe he enjoys competing against Lee Swaby for those kind of fights.

He needs to drop down a couple of levels if he wants to continue. You can't take the money fights if you can't get through them, the odd one fair enough, but he is losing early every fight.

I know Mathew very well, he's doing himself or his reputation no favours with these kind of showings. He's not been training- he asked me to do his corner last night because he had no-one who wanted to do it for him. I wouldn't do it because I know Askin very well too. His capitulation was embarassing.

This a fighter who was amongst the finsest i've ever shared a gym with. He was a superb amateur- seriously a joy to watch and he beat some very good fighters. He was stopped just once in over 80 fights. Now he's getting banged out left, right and centre.

Boxing is a proud mans sport. I hate thinking about my poor run of form, but Mathew doesn't seem to care anymore. He needs to sort himself out because right now he's going nowhere. And I don't mean just in a boxing ring.

Pretty disgraceful showing by Ellis last night. The other fella's left hand was practically dragging on the floor and Ellis never even tried to throw the straight right over the top once. Ellis showed no interest and fornicate all ambition. He actually looked like he was taking the piss when he was smiling on the canvas. He could have easily beaten that count as well. Why show him at all?

Difference between you losing and Ellis losing is miles apart. In each of your losses you were trying to win, and against good experienced boxers. Ellis is losing without trying and against relative novices.

I bet he never thought his career would turn out the way it did.

Ellis was a world class amatuer and being touted for big things a a pro.

But things just never worked out. He is a full blown jourynman now. And needs to hang up the gloves fast, because he's a risk to himself and his health.

There's more to life, than being a punch bag for up and coming prospects. :shame:

dont know the fella at all stu, my only dealings with him were to receive a stick of rock as he entered the ring for bakhtov to KO him. i just dont like our sport being tarnished by non triers. ellis was a decent prospect/talent in his day. yes he was overhyped, but he could box and hit a bit too, i remember him shaking audley to his boots with a straight ?right hand.

sometimes its better to remember people for what they were, not what they turned into. ellis does not deserve tv exposure. as already mentioned, he does not even seem to train !!

Cheers Rhino. I completely agree.

I think Ellis has the personality of a great on top fighter. I remember him, since his comback - headling a show in Blackpool and looking okay. Yeah, he wasn't in the shape he was in - but seemed to be a good on top fighter.

I just think he has that mind set, I would like to see him retire - or not used by promoters against a prospect. He showed in that blackpool bill - that at a level he is confident about, he can still perform well (or at least try).

I've known some amateurs like that - really good fighters, when bulled up that they can win, when he has seen his opponent fight and exposed weaknesses he looked really impressive. But then, when he was told "oh you'll have to be on your best game to beat this guy" simply not try and actually tell me with a smile on his face "oh I'm getting beat tonight". I actually asked him "why the f are you here then" and the response was "well don't know, bit of a laugh and want to see everyone do well".

First time I saw Matthew Ellis was when he boxed as an amateur against the USA and he fought this really fat bloke called Juan Diaz - apperances can decieve because this Diaz was really fast handed and gave Ellis a bit of a boxing lesson and bloodied his nose only for Ellis to get the nod. :witzend:

Ellis was a good fighter and he had the tools to do more than he did. He was scheduled to fight Danny Williams for the British and Commonwealth heavyweight titles - you may laugh but I would have given him a chance there if he could have landed one of his big fast hooks early and made Danny do one of his funny dances but for some reason - the fight was scrapped.

He was a former ABA champion - he can be proud of that, he was also unlucky enough to be too small to be a genuine heavyweight but he was certainly too big to fight at cruiserweight in those days of the 190lbs limit. He seemed dangerous at around 215lbs even late on in his career against Audley and thats where he should have stayed in my opinion.

Boxing is a proud mans sport. I hate thinking about my poor run of form, but Mathew doesn't seem to care anymore. He needs to sort himself out because right now he's going nowhere. And I don't mean just in a boxing ring.
I know you are his mate Jeff, but do you think the last sentence was called for? Especially in a public forum?
